Town Amongst Clubs Eyeing Campbell
Sunday, 9th Jun 2013 22:00

Town, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday are amongst the clubs to have shown interest in striker DJ Campbell, whose QPR contract is up at the end of the month.

Campbell enjoyed a highly successful loan with the Blues between October and January and ended the 2012/13 season as Town’s top scorer with 10 goals from 17 games.

At the end of the spell Blues boss Mick McCarthy expressed an interest in keeping the striker at Portman Road. However, Campbell subsequently joined Blackburn on loan in February after a deadline day permanent move to Rovers failed to go through in time.

Campbell’s season was ended in early March by a foot injury after only five starts, two sub appearances and no goals for the Lancastrians.

The striker recently said that he was weighing up a number of options and at the time wasn’t ruling out remaining at Loftus Road: "We're speaking to a few people at the minute, as well as QPR.”

Whether Town firm up their interest may depend on whether the transfer-listed Michael Chopra is off-loaded. The frontman, believed to be the club’s top earner, has a year remaining on his contract and has indicated that he is in no hurry to move on.

Meanwhile, on a quiet Sunday for Town tabloid speculation, the Blues were again reported to be battling Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday for the signature of released Brighton midfielder Gary Dicker.

Elsewhere, Town boss McCarthy may have been interested to see Watford announcing the release of midfielder Mark Yeates on Friday.

The Blues were understood to have made an enquiry regarding the 28-year-old Irishman in January.

I'd take Campbell if and only if Chopra f*cks off, Campbell will no doubt want big wages, we can't have both on the books surely???

wont happen, whenever other clubs are interested in the same player we usually miss out, wake me up when we do actually sign someone half decent

I cannot imagine we could come up with a wages deal that would interest DJ. He also wanted a three year contract when we were interested in signing him before and at his age that makes no sense for us.

Move on!

17 appearances and 10 goals in his loan spell with us. Speaks for it's self really, sign him up.

On the right wages, yes, can't see Mick letting us get rinsed by players/agents. Campbell. Nouble, McGoldrick is an exciting prospect.

Looking forward to see how Nouble comes on next season, could be an absolute steal.

Yates would be a great signing! Would like to see this happen, where as DJ wouldn't mind if we lost chopra, but if chopra stays then no

If he comes, great. If he doesn't, I won't be too bothered. I'm not totally convinced getting him back (at vast expense) is a brilliant idea. But then he did score 10 in 17 for us.

To sum up, I'm on the fence.

I dont want him. In my opinion an old an overpaid player who isn't better than any other striker we could get in.
Next.

Don't understand why people wouldn't want him - was a great goal scorer for us last season - would at least score 20 goals next season. We have the defence - we need goals - Don't think any of this matters because we can't get anywhere near his wage demands - if he signed for us I would eat my hat!!!!

Id love to see us bring in Dj to fire us into the premier league,he fits in at this club and if it weren't for his goals last season things could be a whole lot different, pity we haven't had any solid offer for Chopra but who is really going to want him???He is a disgrace ,I wonder just how much money he owes the club after us bailing him out of his gambling difficulties and this is a player who thinks that the tail will wag the dog,get tough with him and look for our money back

Good rant kerryblue - but Chopra does not owe the Club any money as it has all been paid back.

I predicted that we would be interested although we know town didn't want to meet his excessive wage demands? Plus could we assume that DJ might have less interested in I.T.F.C now that we've already rejected him?

You can't knock his goal scoring record for us. Wage is important, but Mick is nobody's fool

I imagine, at his age, most contract offers will place him at the upper end of the scale but not the highest earner. However I also imagine there will be quite generous goal and win bonuses attached to the contract, which could see him become the highest earner at the club (but if he does nobody would complain!).

cDo I want DJ? Yes, do I think we need him? No.
Already I think we're shaping up well for next season, some good signings already. My 11;
Loach
New RB, Chambers, Smith, Cresswell
Taylor, Skuse, Hyam, Tabb
McGoldrick, Murphy or Nouble

Hewitt could come in if we don't sign a good RB, in midfield I'd like a natural left winger then Tabb could come into the centre at the expense of.Skuse. I'm interested to see if McCarthy will play Taylor up top.

Even with Chopra leaving i dont see how we have space for DJ. McG/Murphy/Nouble/Taylor is surely all we need for next season.
I doubt DJ will now get his previous wage. He's not likely to attract Premiership sides and he's now the wrong side of 30 and injury prone so if he does want to find a new club that is prepared to offer 3 years, then he'll have to lower his (and his agent's) demands. He'll be a good signing for someone IF he could reproduce the same goal stats he achieved at PR.
As for Yeats, he could be a good signing for us. Great free-kicks crosses etc and still under 30
