Lavery Joining Sheffield Wednesday
Lavery Joining Sheffield Wednesday
Saturday, 12th May 2012 00:07

Former Blues youngster Caolan Lavery is joining newly-promoted Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. The 19-year-old Northern Ireland U21 international had been without a club since turning down a short-term contract with Town at the end of his extended Academy scholarship in October.

After leaving Portman Road, striker Lavery spent time on trial at Sunderland, Leicester and Bradford, who were alerted to his availability by former Blues coach Brian Owen, now a scout at Valley Parade.

The Canadian-born frontman impressed the League Two club but the Bantams were unable to agree the compensation which was due to Town as Lavery is under-23 and had been offered terms and their interest subsequently waned.

In January, Lavery trained with SPL side Kilmarnock, who signed ex-Town Academy defender Rory McKeown last summer, and appeared close to joining them before the move broke down.

The Owls are also understood to have offered terms to right-back Callum Bennett, who recently turned down his offer of a one-year contract at Portman Road.

Are we still due compensation for him?

Don't think we get anything as he never played a game in the first team.

If Bradford City could not agree the compensation due to Town then surely Sheffield Wednesday have.

I guess he was unhappy at Town to the extent he preferred to be without a club rather than stay on minimal terms. I know some will presume it's a club problem but there's another possibility - in every business there are a few players who are unsettled/unhappy, often the best thing is for them to move on both for the business and the employee.

Of course 99% of fans don't now what happens behind the scenes and it's often said it would break many supporter's love if they did know.

another point could be that he thought he was better than he really is and after so many clubs have not offered him a deal, he has seen the grass is not as green as it looks.

Somethings not right with the youth set-up. What's the point in bringing these lads through the system and let thrm clear off and we get nothing.

Surely we can protect our investmensts.

Good riddance to him, the greedy little scrote. An awful lot of negotiations appear to have broken down with numerous clubs for this chap, his priorities as a 19 year old footballer appear to be completely wrong

Walberswick, what's not right with the youth set up is that we're producing very little in the way of talented youngsters who go on to make a name for themselves, either here or elsewhere. Most of our youth from the cup winning side back in 05 are in lower leagues or not made it and retired so the youth issue is not exlcusive to PJ. For some reason, coaching and or ability to pick up good players in the first place we just don't seem to be as good at producing youngsters as many believe.

It's possible that SWFC offered him less money than ITFC, and maybe after being out of work for so many months he thought he'd better take what he can get?!

I presume that ITFC still hold his registration papers and so are entitled to compensation, not that a player who has never made a first team appearance will be worth more than a few beans.

walberswick added 10:47 - May 12
buryblue exactly what is the point of running an acaademy if we can't get some good players. someone needs to sort it out . it is one way that ITFC has always managed to produce players and cash
0

buryblue77 added 11:35 - May 12
Walberswick, it needs sorting or we could struggle to attract players even more so than we currently do, especially when the nonsense that is FFP comes in, which will only widen the gap between the rich and the poor. If we can't improve on the field and attract more than 12,000 season ticket sales or 16,000 on match days we won't be very high on that rich list and the result will inevitably be that we wont be able to macth the bigger clubs (in the same league) when it comes to paying transfer fees and wages etc making a fully functioning academy a priority.

bournemouth blue,

If the club offers a player under the age of 24 a new contract on terms which are equal to or better than there current contract, then the club are entitled to compensation if the contract is not accepted.

GOD BLESS FOOTBALL MANAGER

Another Jordan Rhodes well done Jewell and Clegg idiots the both of them

Mark added 17:00 - May 12
Jordan Rhodes scored 1 in 10 for Ipswich, 2 in 5 for Rochdale and 7 in 14 for Brentford BEFORE we Keane sold him. Caolan Lavery has never scored a league goal. The two hardly compare.

Some of you need a timely reminder (you'll know who you are) that you had a similar opinion of Jordan Rhodes.

Only scored his 39th goal of the season today - NOT BAD hey - for someone who some of you said such things as:- not proven, would struggle if he moved, etc; etc; etc; - good judges of young players hey ????? - I THINK NOT.
