[Blog] One Year On
Written by SitfcB on Friday, 16th Apr 2010 14:39

It's nearly one year since that man Roy Keane was appointed as manager.

Things started well with two wins out of two, expectations were high for this season, and we were all excited to hear who we would sign in the summer.

Damien Delaney was the first to come in, though may be a Jim signing. He was booed and jeered, then dropped. We thought we had seen the last of him, but Keane turned him into a contender for player of the season with his impressive centre-back displays.

Delaney and Gareth McAuley have been like two brick walls at the back for us since October, after McAuley also had a very bad start. He was stripped of the captaincy, and it was said he had played his last game for Town, what a load of tosh that was.

Lee Martin and Tamas Priskin were the 'big' signings. Martin is an ex-Manchester United 'star' who came with a lot of promise, but what a flop he turned out to be.

Priskin, well, he scored 14 goals for Watford. Could he do the same for us? No. He was disappointing to say the least. Priskin is “going nowhere” said Keane, two days later he went on loan to QPR. I can see why some people do not trust Mr Keane after that.

After the summer of 'excitement' the season arrived, and our first game against Coventry City had been chosen to be screened on Sky, so surely a win? That was not the case. What did we all think? Early season nerves, maybe? How wrong we were. Humiliating defeats from Palace, West Brom and Newcastle, our season looked over by September/October. No one had expected this. We all hoped things would change.

With no wins in 14 games, and stuck at the bottom, Derby came to Town and we scraped a win. Things were looking up. We went on a seven-game unbeaten run, up to 20th and just 11 points off the play-offs. The dream was still alive.

That run was ended after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace. Just two days later we were all smiles again with a big 3-0 win over QPR.

Next up was the FA Cup. Could we go on a run and have some cup joy this season? First up were Blackpool, whom we had beaten 3-1 just three weeks previously, away. We won 2-1 and were through to the next round.

Our next opponents were Southampton. A League One club and an easy win. How wrong we were. Town suffered a 2-1 defeat, and the cup dream was over.

Back to the league, West Brom visited Portman Road. We feared the worst, but managed a good result. Some could see how far we had come since our defeat at the Hawthorns, some couldn’t.

More games came, and every match was different. We didn’t know what to expect, and February was very up and down, DWLWDD, the loss coming from bottom of the table Peterborough. How embarrassing, especially after everyone predicted a big win.

March was going to be big.... seven games to play, a few easy, and a few tough. LWWLWLD went the form. The best result was against Cardiff, a top six side. We were not confident before the game, as we had suffered a 1-0 loss to Blackpool, but we played them off the field, and could have won six or seven-nil, the story of our season! So many chances, too few goals!!

At present we sit on top of the 'shooting league' with 352 on target, 251 off and 47 goals. WBA are second with 323 on target, the only difference is they have scored 90 goals, and look where they are.

Back to March, and a game that was surely a home banker, Plymouth come to Town, the legend was back. But we didn’t expect him to take the three points!

Next up were Swansea, which was a must win or at the very least draw. The speculation was, were we to lose, Roy would have gone, thank God we didn’t lose this one, we still had our man and he was backed on the terraces, one fan even had a flag.

April started with two good wins, Reading, who were the inform side, but we didn’t know what to expect. It was a good win, albeit against 10 men. Derby were next, again we didn’t know what to expect. But, it was another good win, a late push for the play-offs maybe?

Next up were Forest, and we expected a tough game. We matched them in the first half and could quite easily, and should have been two or three up by half-time. A different Town team came out for the second half, no there had been no substitutions made, it was the same players, but they must have left something in the dressing room! OK, the early goal didn’t help, but this was no time for excuses.

Forest should be an example, look were they were last season, and look at where they are now. Hopefully next season we will be up there too.

Three games left, Doncaster, Newcastle and Sheffield United, what do we expect? WLD? We can guess, but our season has been so up and down, who really knows?

Next year will be our season; we just need to start off much quicker. I believe Roy Keane is the man to take us up, let’s hope next May we can gather on the Cornhill and celebrate.

KEANO'S BARMY ARMY!!

well, that's certainly a summary of the year. Brushed over the lows a bit, but fair enough I guess.

Would just like to point out that it was no Keane masterstroke to make Delaney a centre-back - he'd been a centre-back pretty much his entire career. The mistake was in thinking he was a full-back.

Anyway, that's one lesson Mr Keane learned, so fair play.

I too am hoping for big things next season, fingers crossed in the transfer window then....
