[Blog] A New (And Unwanted) Record at Portman Road
Written by CherryHintonBlue on Wednesday, 16th Mar 2011 14:24

The almost inevitable defeat against our bogey team Watford last night brought a new, and unwanted, record to Portman Road, as Chris Rand reports.

As I mentioned the other day, a defeat against Watford would represent that rare event of three consecutive home defeats (just the seventh time ever in this division), and rarer still, a second occurrence of that in a season! And so it came to pass*. But if you've sat through those, and indeed every match at Portman Road this season, you've witnessed a new record: the most home defeats in a season at this level. And there are still five home matches to go!

The club record for home defeats is 13, set in the dismal 1994-95 season as Town slid out of the Premier League. There's never been anything like that before or since, but with nine home defeats now, this season has joined 1963-64 and 2001-02 as the joint second-worst on record in that respect. Coincidentally (or maybe not), those other three seasons were all those in which the club was relegated from the top tier; this is the first time there have been nine home defeats in a season in the second tier.

1994-1995, FA Premier League: Home matches 21, Home defeats 13

1963-1964, Division 1: Home matches 21, Home defeats 9
2001-2002, FA Barclaycard Premiership: Home matches 19, Home defeats 9
2010-2011, NPower Championship: Home matches 18 to date, Home defeats 9

1954-1955, Division 2: Home matches 21, Home defeats 8
1962-1963, Division 1: Home matches 21, Home defeats 8
1970-1971, Division 1: Home matches 21, Home defeats 8
1985-1986, Division 1: Home matches 21, Home defeats 8
1993-1994, FA Premier League: Home matches 21, Home defeats 8
2002-2003, Nationwide League Division One: Home matches 23, Home defeats 8
2003-2004, Nationwide League Division One: Home matches 23, Home defeats 8
2006-2007, Coca-Cola Championship: Home matches 23, Home defeats 8

The club has only once ended a season with more points away than at home, back in 1962-63 (23 points at home, 24 away). On two occasions (both fairly recently, as it happens), the season has ended with the same number at home as away (35 each in 2002-03 and 33 in 2008-09). This season Town have 23 at home and 23 away so far, so there's a possibility it could be just the fourth season ever (from 66) where the points gained at Portman Road aren't greater than those from the team's travels.

*Only once have Town lost four home matches in a row at this level, and that was back in the first ever season in the second tier, 1954-55, a season when the club had clearly been promoted above its station and promptly went straight back down to the third division (South). Town have lost four games at home consecutively in the top tier on four occasions, in 1963-64, 1984-85, 1994-95 and 2001-02.

We should all accept that it's going to be at least ten when Nodge turn us over next month....

yeah...pretty dreadful record, we were pretty good under Magilton (I think 2007-08 season but dreadful away) but it's typical of just how inconsistent the team has been for the last 5 years or so!
