That deal with the DUP that was nearly done two weeks ago 11:23 - Jun 26 with 21243 viewsSteve_M

Is now complete it seems.

How much extra are the Tories bunging Northern Ireland as a result? I guess they must have found a magic money tree after all.

1.5bn is a long way from the 100bn+ which JC wanted and where the magic money tree comes from.

However, it's a rubbish deal and the rest of the UK would be well within their rights to ask where their extra money is.

More uselessness from May.

ok, ta. So will Scotland be getting more cash towards this to mirror the extra being given to N Ireland, or will their payments stay the same based on Barnet formula?

Doh ! Everybody knows Barnet isn't in Scotland!

the underlying story here is that the tories are in retreat from austerity. this may well be an opportunity to start relaxing spending constraints elsewhere.

yes, labour have abandoned the middle ground so the tories will happily take it. relaxing austerity between now and the next election is key to that.

The sensible middle ground is still there, you just can't see it from where you are.

I have never claimed to be sensible.

Was just pointing out that there is clearly some middle ground somewhere between swivel eyed brexiteers and John McDonnell. The current polarisation makes for lively arguments but doesn't help in bringing the country together to tackle long term shared challenges.

The hard border is a non story. We haven't had a hard border with the Republic since 1923 when the Common Travel Area was first established. It existed for 50 years before we joined the EU in 1973 and will continue to exist after we’ve left.

Sorry, that is rubbish.

Yes, the CTA existed for 50 years, but Farage's 29 million Romanians and all those Turks who will be allowed in the EU soon, didn't have the automatic right of entry into the Free State or Eire before we both became part of the EU.

To put it into context, the government spent £770 billion last year. What NI is getting is little more than a rounding error. And it's not much more than the amount Gordon Brown gave them in exchange for a single vote in 2008.

The news reported it as a 10% increase in the NI budget. Listening to Tory MPs claiming it was nothing unusual was as laughable as May claiming she hadn't u-turned on their dementia tax during the election.

Yes a tiny amount.

As I said, it's more the perception it sends to the rest of the UK which is really awful.

I'm agreeing with you for a change.

Excellent. So there's no reason not to give the NHS a 2% pay rise then, which would cost the same amount and, critically for the Tories, buy them some good will. Similarly, the net cost of EU membership should be seen as excellent value in the grand scheme of government spending.

Indeed, it's hard not to see this as a political party using taxpayer's money as a bribe to stay in power.

Well that's exactly what it is.

Shameful from the Tories but unfortunately no different to what the other parties would have done.

The other regions of the UK have every right to complain.

It's not what they've done that bugs me especially (buying votes is nothing new), but the fact they can brazenly deny that's the case and try to justify it as some sort of planned investment in the region.

A bit like May saying nothing had changed on the manifesto U turn on the 'dementia tax'.

Or like the blatant denial they'd broken a manifesto promise on the NI contributions for self-employed.

And all the other examples of barefaced, shameless lying.

These were some of the torie's biggest donors during the election so maybe they should club together now to keep them in.

Sir Henry Keswick, former owner of the Spectator, and his wife Lady Keswick, have both donated £25,000 each

David Mayhew, former chairman of JP Morgan Cazenove, has given £25,000

John Griffin, founder of Addison Lee, has shelled out £900,000

David Rowland, property tycoon, has given £200,000

Chief executive of Petrofac, Ayman Asfari, has donated £50,000

John Armitage, Britain's ninth-richest hedge fund manager, has given £500,000 to the campaign

Boss of Caxton Associates, Andrew Law, has backed May with £250,000

Co-founder of CVC Capital Partners, Bruce Hardy McLain, has given £100,000
Iceland boss Malcolm Walker has donated £50,000

Sir John Hall, the former Newcastle United chairman who sold his shares to Sports Direct's Mike Ashley, has given £25,000 to the Tories

Selfridges has set aside £40,000 for the Conservatives.

I'm not sure what your point is?

What does a list of donors have to do with a very poor decision from the Tories with regards to the DUP.

Unite alone gave Labour 2.4m.

You seem to be under the impression that I in any way support the deal or am trying to justify it.

I'm not. I'm putting into context what £1.5billion is in the context of our annual spending.

Saying that money could have been used to give the NHS a pay rise is akin to the Brexit Bus.

And why stop at NHS workers. What about the police? Fire fighters? Teachers? Could you fund a public sector pay increase if 2% across the board every year forever with a lump sum of £1.5 billion.

Your bus is looking even more dishonest than the Brexit bus.

I agree that the deal with the DUP is unattractive & could prove a stumbling block over the Stormont assembly, but what is the alternative in terms of forming a UK government?
