It's always been a fairly conservative country. Especially rurally. Spent lots of time there and not surprised at all but agree it's concerning. They simply aren't big enough to do Oxit and even their most right wing politicians have ruled it out as economically unworkable.

Because 'the rich' while swimming in their austerity/QE generated taxpayer wealth are p1ssing themselves laughing while their media (successfully it would seem) encourage us to blame immigrants who are suffering because of the same people's agendas !

Classic divide & conquer. Create divisions between the working classes [colour, race, religion etc.]. They will then be too busy hating people in a similar, or worse, position they won't notice or ignore the rich helping themselves to more than their slice of the economic cake. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

Oh sweet irony..... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_School "The Austrian School is a school of economic thought that is based on methodological individualism — the concept that social phenomena result from the motivations and actions of individuals."

Indeed. People forget what the Dolfuss and Schuschnigg governments were like before Hitler's forced Anschluss of 1938. Hardline authoritarian fascist to the point of arresting moderate opponents and using artillery on working-class housing estates as they sought to maintain power. Dolfuss was only assassinated by the Nazis because he stood in the way of their own power grab, nothing to do with his policies. Moreover, this will not be the first time that the OVP has held power in conjunction with the FPO.

Not quite true. The party liable to prop up a centre-right/right coalition was the one founded by a former Nazi official (FPO), not the one thought likely to have the largest share (OVP). In any case, the FPO's (now quite ancient) Nazi heritage can be overstated. For much of its existence it was merely anti-socialist and anti-clerical. The turn towards harder, populist xenophobia has come with more recent, younger leaders from Jorg Haider onwards.

Well said. Although I don't think it's all that much of a coordinated conspiracy but clearly there are people who are comfortable with anything that keeps the real status quo intact.

OK, I had only taken my research as far as reading the first couple of paragraphs from the Guardian article and quoting from that. A more pertinent point should be that judging offspring by the actions of their parents can limit their opportunities and any benefits that can accrue to us and society as a whole. There again, those formative years can influence far beyond our comprehension despite all efforts we may perceive as necessary to correct our own shortcomings. If you are still reading Benters, what I am saying is that there may not be grounds to go in and arrest them but they need to be watched, they've got form... Edit: And I should have said the coalition likely to hold power rather than the party likely to win. [Post edited 15 Oct 2017 11:08]

As regards your first para, Haider was indeed the son of actively Nazi parents (having remained members of the party even when it was banned in Austria during the mid '30s), tho by all accounts a gifted individual.

Conspiracies are far too complex to maintain on anything other than a small contained level - I prefer to think insular incompetence and down right selfishness rather than conspiracy most of the time. Anger against immigrants tends to be media led and subject to an agenda; Chinese whispers creating urban myths reported as truth with no checks and balance [fake news?] Who influences the media? Or do the media influence to alter opinions in favour of those the media themselves favour? [i.e. papers backing a particular party.

I touched in this in the FLA thread. The real Nazis won the day we started throwing around the term Nazi at anyone whose views we disagreed with. When we started calling people like Nigel Farage a Nazi was the day the real Nazis were able sneak under the radar. We are immune to the term Nazi. When your lifelong friend who decided to vote UKIP or for Brexit was branded a Nazi on social media was a gift to the real Nazis. Every time a football fan who had concerns over immigration, whether real or perceived, was told to “dry his Nazi tears” was the day the real Nazis won. [Post edited 15 Oct 2017 11:43]

Thank you for your contribution. Which is always welcome. Of course, as I often have to remind you, purely saying something is b0llocks doesn’t necessarily make it so. Perhaps some reasoning behind your critique, some meat on the bones so to speak, would help me take on board your comments in a more constructive way. Thanks in advance.

Ouch, have to take that one on the chin - although hilarious is pushing it a bit even for someone as desperate for recognition as me. And are you implying an exchange rate here? Complete issue of 'The Sun on Sunday' = Two paragraphs in the The Guardian = 1 correction from Guthrum...

Did you read the article? Did you read the bit about the likely coalition? "Founded by ex-Nazis after the second world war, the FPOe almost won the presidency last year and topped opinion polls before Kurz’s radical OeVP makeover in spring."

I was going to ask shoopdewoopdeshoopshoopdelangalang if he had read the whole thread but now I have to ask you if you did first - apparently the FPO founders only included one ex-Nazi. And apparently in that correction I used the word Nazi once too often. And also in the correction of the correction.
