M6 Toll 09:11 - Feb 9 with 9002 views | unbelievablue | Worth it? I'm driving up to the Lake District tomorrow, I reckon I'll hit the M6 Toll at about midday.

M6 Toll on 09:31 - Feb 9 by unbelievablue | Does it not force you to drive through Stoke on Trent? |
A500 is dual carriageway all the way through the middle of Stoke, so isn't too bad.

Fair enough. I'll check traffic in the morning and if it doesn't force me down a route, I think I'll flip a coin.

M6 Toll on 09:54 - Feb 9 by unbelievablue | Yeah, that's my usual route to be honest. And I'm staying in Ambleside, so it doesn't really matter too much either way. I was originally going to up the A1 then across the Dales via Leyburn, but the weather looks awful. |
I drove to the Lakes from Norfolk 2 weeks ago on a Saturday, no problems whatsoever. (Did A11/A14/A1/A66) Couldn't believe how dead the A1(M) was past Leeds/Wetherby
M6 Toll on 10:59 - Feb 9 with 2668 views | hammo56 | Didn't use the toll road the other week on a Friday just after midday and the traffic wasn't that bad. Having said that known other times for it to be gridlocked.

M6 Toll on 09:26 - Feb 9 by ITFC_Forever | Do it all the time for away games in the North West. Absolute doddle. A50 is empty (and 100% dual carriageway, barring a couple of roundabouts), and you come on to the M6 at Junction 16. It can be slow from there to Manchester as others have said, but if you go up the M6, you'll get that whether you start at the beginning or J16. [Post edited 9 Feb 2018 9:26]

A50 is best route when you get to Stoke remember to go right on A500. Don't join M6 at j16 go across country and join at J18 or even further up and cut out the roadworks north of J16. Think it is A5011 then A 4 something, something.

M6 Toll on 09:20 - Feb 9 by ITFC_Forever | M1, A50, A500, M6 is the correct answer. Avoid the West Midland altogether. |
This man speaks sense! Avoid all roads around Birmingham if you can....

Yes you can. The google maps satnav tells you how many minutes delayed other routes are, in grey. You might need to scroll about a bit to get the other routes in view.

That is a much nicer route. The real hold up on the M6 at the moment (as mentioned previously in the thread) is just South of Warrington, so coming from the South after the Toll has rejoined. The advantage of the M6 Toll over the M6 around Birmingham has been amplified by M6 being restricted to 60mph all round Birmingham, supposedly to reduce emissions, but the cynic in me thinks not enough people were paying the toll so they made the benefit greater. The cameras are all variable speed limit too, and it can drop down to 50mph for congestion (or less if there is an accident). If you go the Stoke dual carriageway route be aware that Staffordshire are very hot on speed cameras and there are lots on this route. And you'd still hit the Knutsford hold up just South of Warrington on the M6. The big caveat on the A1/A66 route is it is beautiful but incredibly exposed to the weather, so in snow or very heavy rain can be extremely unpleasant, and there is snow forecast for the East of the country tonight.
M6 Toll on 17:52 - Feb 9 with 2496 views | strikalite | I went A1 and cut across, check for roadworks though... M6 Toll, can you pay on the gate? Or is it a Dartford crossing job of must pay in advance?
