All this talk about Maradona got me thinking. Without doubt moral compass questionable, but footballing ability one of the best. Who are 'your' top 5 all time greats?

I think it is really hard to include Pele in these things. He claims 1000 goals etc but that is disputed because there weren't records kept. There is no doubt he was very good and the best at his time but it was a completely different era and the game has changed so much.
I admire you for leaving Cristiano out, I have said many times that he is not in the same class football wise as the others listed. He has however achieved phenomenal success through his athleticism so I reluctantly included him. I was still a bit young for Cruyff but Zidane is ahead for me because he played in the middle and could do everything.

Yes the game has changed, but you might also say that the modern era players don’t have to deal with straight up assault like Pele did (watch Brazil WC 66 footage for an example) - watching a breeze knock over players in the current WC is quite a contrast. |  | | |

I think it is impossible to leave Pele out, even with the spurious claims of 1,000 goals he has an incredible career. 3 World Cup Winners medals, and a starring role in the tournament at just 17 in 58 and then again in 1970.
No-one has scored more for Brazil and his club career was at almost a goal a game - Santos were a fine side, winning the CHampionship consistently and a couple of World Club Cups.
A shame he never came to Europe, but he'd have been a success here - like any of the greats listed in this thread they'd have excelled and adapted in any era | |

The Brazilian was still a far better player on his day. As I said I have included cr7 in mine for what he has achieved but he was no one near the player of the others. He was a phenomenal athlete | |

You can look at stats or you can actually watch them play. It's only the fact that fat Ronaldo's peak was relatively short that stops him being in the top 2 or 3. He was a phenomenal talent. | |
