I left realising that hotel rooms you can book per hour are for bad things.

I didn't make the connection at all when booking that place........

And, being told being 'friendly' to some young lady pays for her education brings the realisation that the place really is quite backward

Most of the miserable old codgers who bang on about bringing back national service were probably too young to do it when it was abolished in the 1960s. A bit like the war in the sense that people in their 70s take credit for it even though they were still in nappies.

Likewise, I'd never return.

While parts of it are fantastic, and I'd certainly advocate going, there isn't enough to do to warrant being pulled back.

It's also very expensive, so next time I'm in South East asia for a while I'd imagine it will get skipped.

I'm probably the only one on here who did National Service and spent some of it in Singapore. We National Servicemen didn't mind giving up two years of our lives if meant the generations which came after us had secure futures.

Just show some gratitude!!

How long were you there?
Did you walk Orchard Road at not get accosted?
& the infamous building on that road?

Anywhere that rents out books because they are too expensive to buy has questionable standards.

In fairness a lot of Nashos served in Korea and in the Kenyan Emergency, some very unpleasant situations and losses. My uncle served in Kenya during the Mau-Mau Insurgency and my father served in Germany patrolling Berlin where it could get a little hairy in the 1950/60's.

This is such a backwards attitude to have.

“"As all male Singaporeans liable for full-time NS put aside personal pursuits to dutifully enlist... it would not be fair to approve applications for deferment for individuals to pursue their own careers and development," said the Ministry of Defence in a statement.“

Singapore isn’t fighting any wars, let the people live their lives.

Meteorologists never bashed squares and, on £2 12s 6d per week, rarely got pissed - even on Christmas Island. That's where the atom and hydrogen bombs, which kept you secure during the cold war - you're probably too young to know about that - were tested.

Unbelievably dangerous situation to put young people in! I sincerely hope your health has not suffered. Another example of the dangerous situations National Service personnel were put in.
