So they want to take our gas hobs away now boyos 08:04 - Feb 22 with 3968 viewschicoazul

along with our wood burning stoves.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47306766

But hang on, this is weird. It seems like shipping goods around the world as part of Globalisation and world trade is quite polluting too. In fact it seems that one industry produces more CO2 than.....the entire country of Germany????

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-43714029

But not please lets keep tinkering around the edges and stop people cooking on gas instead. Can't possibly make any massive changes can we, oh no.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Here's the fundamental problem: we have one life. Anyone with any sense wants to have the best life they can. That is always going to be an instincitve tension with trying to worry about the future.

Absolutely. And despite my little poke at humanity I'm sure that I'm a massive hypocrite in lots of way.

Plastic packaging on a lot of vegetables plays a huge role in extending their life.

No packaging is great if you eat veg within a couple of days, but if you want it to last in your fridge then packaging is essential.

Its not always the case that packaging is bad, albeit it probably is excessive in a lot of cases. What IS without doubt a problem is how we dispose of things.

Surely the obvious solution is to put the veg into reusable plastic contains (which in the future will be made with plastic that can be broken down easily).

I don't really need my avocados placed in a plastic tray and then wrapped in a plastic bag. Luckily the local grocers here are truly superb and it's brown paper bags all the way.

Totally agree that disposal is a huge issue - they don't even issue recycling bins here.

Bioplastics are a potentially very bad idea IMO as you end up with very confusing messages about what can be recycled. They should only be considered for plastics which are commonly littered.

Bad product design, and the huge range of packaging products (tetrapak is the absolute worst), is a big problem. The recently published DEFRA resource and waste strategy that Gove has been behind has some measures in it which could massively improve this though. Enhanced Producer Responsibility is the thing in particular if you're interested in learning more... https://www.letsrecycle.com/news/latest-news/options-set-out-for-packaging-waste

I could bore you for hours on this subject - it is very much my area of specialism!

Arent you one of those guys who always goes after me with the "alcohol is legal" line when I talk about not decriminalising drugs? Forgive me if not.

Climate change is an emergency so why just tinker at the edges?

I always decant my veg into Stayfresh bags from Lakeland before placing in frig, the veg keep at least 3 x longer that way and the bags are reuseable.

I've used an induction hob for past 5 years ad have no problem whatsoever with it - it has 11 heat settings including a low1 and low2 for keeping warm/hot, and is works beautifully from simmer to fast boil & evrything between. Incredibly energy efficient & cheap - boils water quicker than a kettle, so some people use it for that instead.

Used to be able to buy single use wooden toothpicks from Boots etc., but they seem to have stopped stocking them everywhere, now single use plastic only 😡 Have to buy cocktail sticks instead!

I have thought about it, and I and my family eat much less animal produce these days.

Trouble is I think my methane output quadruples when I replace meat with beans. Oooooffff! It's a quandry.

Me too. I love a vegetable curry or chilli. Homemade curry with a ton of lentils is my new favourite meal.

I love our beautiful planet, but not as much as gas hobs. This bloody Star Trek cooker that's been installed at my gaff is awful- keeps switching itself off if you place the pans half an inch in the wrong direction.

They can take it all, but leave my gas cooker alone!

If your cucumber goes off, fine it rots, so stick on a compost heap or equivalent, it won't go to waste, just gets put back into the ecosystem.

Why replace that with some plastic that will be around for couple of hundred years that may never get recycled.

A vegetable that goes off is easier to recycle than the plastic it is wrapped in.

When we moved into our current house, the kitchen had an induction hob. We tried to get along with it. But absolutely hated it. It was truly awful.

We now have a six ring gas burner in our new kitchen. If they want people to switch, the tech is going to have to improve enormously.

It is also relevant that so many pans simply wont work well with it. It almost requires investment in heavy bottomed expensive pans.

IOt isn't the case that you have to have expensive cookware. Black iron frypans & cheap cast iron work very well.
If seasoned properly you get natural non stick pots & pans

Chillis last for ages if well kept. The supermarkets insist on selling them in plastic packets of 3 or 4 for 79p. No coincidence that they started adding packets a few years ago having previously sold loose, and then used it to ramp up prices.

Some truth in that. But the greenhouse gasses from wasted fruit and veg is a huge contributor to climate change.

Better to both preserve the food AND manage plastic waste properly.

My ceramic, heavy bottomed wok with lid cost about £40 from Greenweez.

Heavy bottomed v. large stewpan from Habitat or Argus, less than £20.

Quality frying pan from Sainsbury's <=£15, set of 3 heavy-bottomed smaller pans <=£30
