Got a major telling off for jaywalking in New York. I had no idea idea what jaywalking was which confused the policeman to such an extent that he thought I was being difficult. After chatting with a couple members of staff at the hotel where I was staying they found it odd then I had no idea what jaywalking was.

I have never heard of, or spoken to anyone, who has been pulled up for jaywalking here. You must have been unlucky! I've always assumed it was something that was never enforced actually, as its more common for people to just cross whenever than waiting for the lights.

If I remember correctly the copper came across as quite pedantic - suppose there’s one of them in all police stations regardless of where you are.

I'd done nothing wrong but for some reason they pulled me out of the line and searched all my luggage. Having seen it was full of vodka and fags, as it should be, they let me on my way. There was also a cat wandering about on the runway.

That's true. They aren't just in the NYPD either. US border staff are, more often than not, utter turds too. [Post edited 28 Feb 2020 17:57]

I was shouted at for it in New York too. I had heard of it but never knew what it was until an irate cooper explained my misdemeanour. [Post edited 28 Feb 2020 18:12]

I had a fair argument with US Border control when they came onto a ship in LA. They refused to show their ID, saying that they are in America. I pointed to the flag on the stern and said you’re on my turf, you are required under ISPS to provide ID. I got threatened by them. In the end I gave them two choices, show ID, or Foxtrot Oscar. They ended up showing ID but had swapped IDs with each other. I refused them entry. They refused me shore leave. I ended up writing a complaint and I was then issued a shore pass.

Interesting! Now I've said what I've said I'm bound to be stopped for it on my way home tonight and promptly deported.

Think you will be ok over here old fruit. Birmingham isn't known as a hotspot for that kind of thing.

Judging by the US Border Patrol I would imagine they would deport you to Australia even if you showed them a British passport....

I've read a book called zone 22. It's about a Brit who flew to Russia for a business trip after being in Amsterdam for a stag party. He still had a very small amount of hash in his pocket amd was caught with it. Spent a fair few years in the Russian prison system. It's ridiculous what he went through. It's a really good read and an eye opener. If you ever get the chance to read it do so.

I was told that I was lucky it was the Guardia Civil and not the Nationals.

Spanish police systems are mental, I think it was probably the Policia Nacional rather than the Guardia but my Dad regularly used to drive past a police station in Palma de Mallorca which had an anti-aircraft gun outside the front door. Later in his international wandering he told me a story from Andorra involving an ancient Brit being cared for an English nurse in her late teens. The condition of her elderly charge worsened suddenly and an ambulance was arranged to transport him to the big hospital in Barcelona. But he died on the way so the ambulance staff told her they had to stop the vehicle and leave him exactly where he died under Spanish law. Having dumped him out of the ambulance they drove off but had informed the Guardia Civil of the event so that this wee girl was left alone with a dead body in the middle of night on a deserted road before a bunch of heavily armed and sinisterly uniformed men confronted her.

Think I've been lucky with US immigration, stern but not had any major hassles. But NYPD can be proper knobs. Had a gun pulled on me once for climbing under a barrier to get to a metro station in Times Square. There was a film premier and the barrier was keeping the fans in check and I was 20 yards from the metro entrance and facing a trek of probably 15 mins to get to the same entrance.

Friday world wide challenge on 05:38 - Feb 29 with 1035 views | jeera | Police called on me in Thailand for crashing a jet ski. A mate and I shared the driving on an Australian trip and he was in the driving seat when we were stopped for speeding in the middle of nowhere. There was a fine and some endorsement or other. We got into a row with two Aussie cops in Byron Bay. One of them touched his gun a couple of times which was an unnecessary attempt at intimidation. They really were a pair of pricks out to cause a fuss. Received threats and a final warning from customs returning from France/Belgium for the 3rd time in a week. A mate got arrested a few days later when he used my travel discount card. I took heed and never did a run again. Been arrested here a few times for various things. Nothing too significant overall there really.

First time I ever had a copper pull a gun - was in Italia 90. The distribution of tickets for the semi final to the England members club fans was from a ticket booth in Turin. Probably about 2000 people there and there was some agitation as it was properly disorganised. After a couple of hours tempers were getting raised and there was a fair amount of shouting at the FA officials inside the booths and at the police who were being their usual aggresive selves at the sides. Then they decide the way to police this is to pull out their guns. Genuinely I walked up to a line of them, put my arms in the air (Like the guy in Tianamen Sq) and just shouted "What you going to do, fcking shoot us?" Looking back, am still undecided if it was brave or stupid = probably a bit of both - but armed plod really don't sit well with me.
