More than nine in 10 people dying have an underlying health condition, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.
In 91% of cases the individuals had other health problems
The most common was heart disease, followed by dementia and respiratory illness
The average number of conditions those who were dying had was 2.7.
The ONS has also looked at the differences in death rates by age and sex.
Men are twice as likely to die with cornonavirus.
Unsurprisingly, the risk of dying increases with age, rising sharply from age of 60 onwards.
The ONS has also looked to what extent cornonavirus is causing the death of individuals rather than another condition being more of a factor.

You look at any group of people especially age 60 plus and there will be some sort of underlying health issue. Not necessarily one that should bring about an early death such as this bug is assisting to do.
Even ignoring that there are still 1in 10 dying who have no 'known' pre existing health issues. I still wouldn't like to chance thise odds if I had just been dropped off at hospital.
A better system would be to calculate the percentage who have died but shouldn have had they not contracted the illness. However that figure is probably impossible to measure. |  | | |

it was always thus.... most people over 50 have an underlying medical condition - and in times past pneumonia was described as 'the old person's friend'
More worrying perhaps is the fact that the NHS has effectively closed down at present except as a holding area for corona virus cases.... the number of people who usually fill hospitals to capacity but have been cruelly booted out or denied life-saving and life-changing treatment or will die because of corona virus - but without having it is probaby going to be a bit of a shocker. | |

A lot of that is down to people not wanting to go near hospitals while this is in progress, rather than because they have been 'booted out'. |  |

It is said that one possible reason in the gender disparity between men and women is due to men being less vigilant in washing their hands. Do we know if there are more numbers of cases for men than women by the same ratio as deaths?
Judging by the number of men who i see at work fail to wash their hands having used the toilet I'm inclined to agree |  |

I'd be amazed if that wasn't the case. That's why this virus is so dangerous, and vigilance is necessary.
The people getting all het up about "but the virus didn't kill them" really are missing the point. It seems to be a clear nudge off this mortal coil, trying to be clever over semantics whilst we're hitting a thousand deaths a day and not counting the most likely to die amongst the care homes and isolated elderly in the country is counter productive. |  |
