Here's some data with a small explanation on the A Level results 12:03 - Aug 13 with 10821 viewsMullet

My twitter timeline is full of A Level teachers with various levels of rage, upset and individual horror stories consoling each other. The bitterness and wrangling over this will no doubt increase once GCSEs come in next week.

I hope any parents/students out there today are not left too upset or resentful if the envelope wasn't what was predicted.

I've also just spotted this thread on the attainment gap which is useful too for showing why so many people are angry and / or resigned.

This Twitter thread gives a very good explanation regarding what happened.

A lot of people are pointing out the irony of Gavin Williamson talking about people being promoted above their ability. It applies to pretty much everyone in this shower of a Tory government.

Or the hereditary peer who claimed failing his A-levels didn't do him any harm.

Aside from the obvious jabs you can make here about them being rubbish, just generally I cannot recall a time ever where someone gets promoted due to having a good degree from x years ago. It's such so out of touch.

Thanks, there are a few like that. His model is the kind of thing I was trying to show earlier. I also noticed the tweets from this account are good for breaking down some of the subtler or oft missed arguments in with the main objections.

Wow, that top thread is mind blowing.

The Mrs has been involved in clearing the last couple of days and is dealing with cases very similar to this example of a rogue 'U'. The fate of these students is going to come down to the attitudes of those involved in clearing as much as any particular process. If the people they speak to or the Heads of Departments feel they deserve a chance, they'll get in Uni with grades well below the norm (even if in a foundation year to have a chance to prove themselves). If not and/or the Uni is a popular one and they've met their intake targets, then some students will undoubtedly be missing out on their first choice.

That’s appalling, I’m really sorry to hear that and you’re right there’s broad brush stuff going on but it’s the individual stories which are coming out are horrific in some cases.

I did see a grammar school in Wolverhampton had a similar story. Which begs the question where these rises have gone? If the reductions are so prevalent at the bottom and middle of the system....

There’s been blanket downgrading throughout the year
13 at this school. One (verified) A mock B CAG E Actual!
A comparatively small increase in A* & A grades seems to be being used to justify a huge swathe of reductions to lower grades. In statistical terms some downgrades will be justified but many not.
Plus there doesn’t appear to have been any allowance for pupils who rely on a big ramp up of effort and diligence before a final exam. To not take into account the CAG if a class is above a certain size beggars belief as does some the rhetoric from ministers. Why immediately rule out doing what Scotland has done for example?
