School/ Uni closures - thought it easier to start a new thread 16:01 - Nov 2 with 936 views | homer_123 | the guidance from a number of sources to the Government regarding this lockdown have made it absolutely clear that without School/ Uni closures the R number cannot be reduced to below 1. As we have seen, although the Gov have consistently said they follow the 'science' they do so on their terms. The Gov have chosen, for the time being, to go with with the restrictions as per the weekend briefing but....discussions are ongoing and it's expected that schools and unis will have to close as they know they have left it too late to avoid doing this. There is a question about nursery and early years and also primary schools. We may see that the Gov attempt to keep these open whilst closing Secondary and Universities. In terms of where I have heard this from - three different sources.

School/ Uni closures - thought it easier to start a new thread on 16:30 - Nov 2 with 866 views | Cheltenham_Blue | I'm a course leader and senior lecturer at a Uni now and following the announcement on Saturday, my immediate reaction was, "How the f**k is that going to work?" It is absolutely non sensical to keep Universities and secondary schools open and expect the R to fall below 1. I've already asked colleagues to start looking at their modules and seeing if, and how, they can be moved fully online should it be necessary, which I suspect it will be, for all of semester two after Christmas. To quote someone else, "Keeping schools and universities open is like trying to keep swimmers safe from germs in a swimming pool, whilst opening a designated pi55ing area in the shallow end."

School/ Uni closures - thought it easier to start a new thread on 16:44 - Nov 2 with 822 views | StokieBlue | It's interesting that none of the other European lockdowns are closing schools either. I wonder if they are all ignoring the advice or if they get different advice. Certainly it seems strange to close lots of vectors of transmission whilst leaving schools open. SB

My understanding, based on the conversations today, is that within the UK we've left putting in new restrictions too late which has put us in a situation where we are not going to be able to keep open Schools and Unis whilst getting the R number down. I'm not sure what the situ is across other Countries - I didn't ask that question!!!

France only locked down 3 days ago though so not really a huge difference, especially as they had much higher cases than us. They are making children over 6 wear masks at school though. I certainly don't doubt your information, I've said since the announcement that if the aim is to drive down the R and the cases before Christmas then it doesn't seem to make much sense to leave schools open. My daughter has been told by her sixth form today they will have to wear facemasks at all times going forward.

Quite a few people seem to wear it like that regardless. I guess their theory is that owning the mask is doing their bit regardless of what they do with it. SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes, I have noticed that on the few occasions I've been on public transport. Wearing it over your neck or something silly. I really enjoyed the person who pulled it down to get onto the tram, before pulling it back up when getting off.

Latest R number range for the UK 1.1-1.3 Latest growth rate range for the UK +2% to +4%

But surely it's not the universities being 'open' that creates the transmission risk, it's the students being together in halls / student housing etc. At my university, closing the university wouldn't make much difference - there's very little formal face to face teaching going on, but lots of socialising/partying... The students should never have come back to campus, obviously, but now they're here, there's not a lot anyone can do about it really.

My guess-timate looking at the numbers would be that with schools etc. open but most other things closed, the R will remain around 1 or a bitt lower across the country, so infection rates staying at about what they are now for a while then very gradually falling. With deaths to catch up to current infection rates, I'd guess we'll hit a shallow peak of about 500-600 deaths per day in late November, and then start to fall very gradually up to a lockdown Christmas. Town in 9th place for Christmas, but high expectations that Vincent-Young, Norwood and Downes might return in the New Year to kickstart a play-off push.
