The Christmas conundrum 12:41 - Nov 18 with 2666 viewsBluefish

Would it not be a better solution to say to everyone. I am sorry but Christmas just isn't going to able to happen this year in a safe way so we are moving the bank holidays to mid Jan or wherever when we feel the virus will be suppressed and we will have some sort of vaccine.

Takes away the uncertainty and everyone can plan for it. Who actually cares about Christmas being on some fictional blokes birthday really? The county just loves having a few bank holidays strung together and an excuse to get pissed and eat too much

Longer it is left it becomes too late and another failure of this government in controlling the virus

No probs - it's easily done.

I think the main problem is everyone needs a bit of clarity to plan and prepare, it almost needs to be announced it will be a free for all, or it will be under tiered restrictions.

I appreciate it isn't that easy, but sometimes it's just better to deliver bad news early to let people prepare

Given that no one can really say for sure what the bed occupancy rate will be in 5 weeks time, then it would be foolish to make a decision new.

However given that much is geared towards those few days the idea is to work towards it being 'open' - which will mean having the bed capacity to cope with the increase in admissions afterwards

It us as basic as that

I'm still doing Xmas. Just with the family. People can manage that for one year can't they? Rather than putting it back or canceling it. Lots of people around here already have decorations and lights up. Bit early for that l think just yet, but 1st December we are putting them up so the Mrs has told me. She says everyone needs cheering up so they are going up a bit quicker than normal. I can't really argue with that.

Is that a paradox, or an oxymoron, or something else...

You could do that at anytime that there is a few bank holidays, you know like at a time when there ismt a rampant pandemic

I'm absolutely gutted. Snr and Mum haven't seen their grandson since February, they've seen his birthday and met their newest grandson via whatsapp videos and video calls. It's not exactly warzone stuff, but it is gutting to live this way.

Given how badly my health has been hit since summer, and the effects I see on work, on the community and the utter madness of people taking no care or precautions or outright flouting the rules it feels harder to fight to the good fight doesn't it? I can see why people just don't who you wouldn't normally expect to be so reckless or selfsh. We've had months of terrible messaging, even worse corruption and governance and the end result will be more confusion and people turning on one another when we spend 2021 picking up the pieces won't there?

Maybe just spend time with your family when there's not a global pandemic on and you could give a vulnerable family member a potentially fatal dose.

For all your w@nking on about it being a 'free' country, millions of vulnerable people have been under effective house arrest since March. The longer this drags on, the longer they'll stay that way.

The more you mingle and mix now, the longer tis will drag on and the longer, ultimately, we'll ALL be under restrictions.

While I agree with your first paragraph, and would discourage mixing with people outside a household this xmas, I really don't think it will make a difference to how long it drags on for. Vulnerable people will shield until they're vaccinated, and ultimately how long this goes on for is more dependent on how quickly the vaccine is developed and distributed.
