UNICEF help to feed British children for the first time in their history 13:20 - Dec 16 with 16935 viewsSpruceMoose

It can't just be me who finds this both shocking and appalling? Britain is a wealthy country. There is money available for so many ridiculous things, but not food for some of our most impoverished children?

I can't even begin to get into the mindset that celebrates the unfathomable amounts that Brexit will cost the UK, but at the same time strokes the chin and gets the calculator out to decide that we can't afford to help our most vulnerable through a pandemic. Wonderful.

Damn the Conservatives, damn anyone who voted for them and damn anyone who still supports them.

I was just thinking it took me years to see through [redacted] much to the frustration of decent members of the board. Paz is just a younger model. I need to learn my lessons and just ignore him. On multiple subjects now he's had his arguments destroyed with facts and just isn't interested. Time to walk away.

"What about such & such?"

*gets answer*

"Yeah but what about...?"

*gets an answer*

"But what about...?"

*gets answer*

And repeat.

Not relevant. It’s a lot of money that could help the people it was intended to help.

You're being willfully obtuse here because your 'argument' has been torn to shreds by multiple posters.

You can't even keep up with your own reasonings - one minute you're concerned about African children in third world countries (a phrase that isn't used much these days), the next you're very concerned about UNICEF mismanaging their funds, and then you're outraged that UNICEF are playing politics. Which is it?

Do you even know why you're wasting your time going out to bat to defend the Conservatives at this point or are you just so damn tribal that you don't care?

That wasn't Good Gifts was it?

No. It was one of the globals - can't remember. RKD might remember if he wanders through this thread. I can't remember yesterday, although I do remember most things before 1985.

I'm telling you straight up - I get the tears in my eyes when I see all the sh1t on the TV and all the companies asking for donations but guess what - I refuse to give them anything now, if they left me alone after I would happily give handsomely.

All of a sudden Black Lives Matter after all. Didn't matter so much a few months ago.

If it fits a convenient angle.

As others have said too, it's a case of disagreeing with ever he considers to be the libs/lefties in any which way. There's no conviction whatsoever.

Have a look at Good Gifts. Recommended by MSE. You get exactly what you pay for and they don't pester you relentlessly afterwards.

Years ago I sponsored via PLAN INT. and was perfectly happy with what I thought was the arrangement.

I never even checked the payments for years.

When I looked the payments had increased something like 10 fold! I rang them immediately and cancelled. Shame but it made me mad.

But that's not to say all organisations are corrupt, as I'm sure they aren't and that the increases will have been in the print somewhere had I looked. But the method of increased payments annoyed me.

But that's not to say I wouldn't do it again, it is to say I would be careful the next time to make sure I knew the score.

I had a friend who worked in Africa for a children's charity for several years and she assured me the work they do is most worthwhile.

The fact that his profile is sitting at -1000 upvotes is a good reflection on the users of this forum though.

NSPCC did that to me too many years ago. And they'd be on the phone every five minutes trying to get me to increase the amount I gave. It's fecking annoying so I completely understand why it puts people off.

I prefer to make one off donations or donate to local charities with my time and effort these days rather than set up a direct debit that brings a deluge of phone calls every night.

By the way, re: the pot bellies comment. That is called kwashiorkor and is caused by a severe protein deficiency. It is perfectly possible to get enough protein without getting enough calories, especially in the west where we have a bit of an obsession with protein. When you consider the protein needs of a child you are not going to see many kids in this country with kwashiorkor but that doesn't mean they are not going short of food.

Point of order.

It was Lucan who introduced the pot belly reference. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t see you pull him up on it though.

Really don’t get the misty-eyed puppy love he engenders on the back of a few tall tales involving stupidity, excess alcohol & a desperation to recount it all to his eager fanboys.

Paz was just the puppet who repeated something his new ‘mate’ said because it sounded grown up.

Of course the problem is whose pockets will your £20 end up in if you opt to send it to Yemen, Syria, Liberia, Bangladesh or Myanmar.

I have a massive mistrust with charities these days and it hangs quite heavy on my heart. A few years back rather that give wife, kids and Mother a main Christmas present (because we really don't need anything, it's stupid) I donated a wad on each persons behalf to get a kids eyesight done in Africa per person. After that I was plagued with calls for over a year from one charity or another, it really made me feel quite uneasy - and pissed off.

As an ex pedlar I always knew that the bucket muppets in the street were ripping you a new one but I sort of expected better from a TV advert from the globals. Unfortunately though it is the worst form of capitalism and you are getting screwed.

Even after they have picked your pocket - whose pocket is your 50% ending up in?

The sector isn’t in a good way. Trust is low with the public, not just you, as it is with institutions generally. My theory is that this broader collapse in trust is anchored in the MPs expenses scandal, but whatever it is, trust isn’t likely to return soon.

People give money in a less reliable manner. The number of people who donate a monthly payment to a charity has been dwindling for a while. They’re also more expensive to recruit and to subsequently retain, meaning lifetime value of a supporter is more important than ever. Some charities make the mistake you describe of hammering people too much with this in mind, at the expense of focussing on charitable purpose.

Lots of fundraising mechanisms are of course lost for the time being.

To the OP, the UNICEF move is undoubtedly politically motivated. I don’t understand how it can be seen in any other context. It is however, also motivated by their charitable purpose.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

I am fully aware it was Lucan who originally said it. Paz said that in his post. I replied to him rather than Lucan purely out of laziness. Paz's post was right there and I couldn't be bothered to go back and find Lucan's post. My reply was factual and I didn't have a go at Paz or anything so I really didn't think it mattered who I replied to.

I think you're just using my post as a vehicle to have another dig at Lucan. If I had been nasty or critical to Paz in that reply you'd have a point but if you read it again it's purely factual.

Truly impaired.
