We’ve even seen the UK warning signs over the last 5 years or so, as this article points out.

One particular aspect that jumps out is that 45% of Republicans supported the siege even seeing the footage. That’s not extremism in the classic image of loons on the fringe but this is saying that there’s a foundation of normalised support – and I definitely think we’ve seen a similar mainstream radicalisation in the UK around Brexit and identity issues. Coupled with the rapid rise in far-right domestic terrorism and an already flawed, untrusted democracy, it doesn’t seem we’re a massive leap away from something major if the “wrong” people get into power. Or even just challenge the narrative like BLM did.
The latest addition of GB News and News UK TV into an already over-represented right-wing media, the new BBC Chairman and Director General both being Tories and the government being Tory itself don’t mean that the sting is taken out of it and that people will stand down. Quite the opposite – this is part and parcel of the normalisation that will embolden extremism. In fact there may be a battle over consumers and voters (and giving people what they want) that confirms beliefs and pushes the nationalism, identity and othering even further.
