What's happened to Kier Starmer lately? 15:42 - Jan 27 with 4185 views | GlasgowBlue | Still by far a preferable option to Johnson (sorry to piss on your parade Herbie) and if there was an election tomorrow he would still get my vote. But he seems to offer little in way of constructive alternatives. He got off to a fantastic start and forensically took Johnson apart every week at PMQ's. But that approach seems to have worn off and he appears to now whinge for whinging sake. He was, and still is, all over the shop on the closing/ re-opening of schools. Now, after berating Johnson for ignoring his scientific advisors, he wants to tear up the JCVI plan to vaccinate the population in order of priority, and introduce his own list of people deemed as a priority which seems to get longer and longer each time he opens his mouth. I hope Koonters isn't to be proved right and we've been sold a pup.

In a two-horse race against the worst government in living memory, during the worst health, social and economic crisis and when Brexit is a new source of discomfort. Meanwhile despite the open goal Starmer’s own favourability ratings are tumbling. Yeah, blinding job.

What's happened to Kier Starmer lately? on 17:07 - Jan 27 by GlasgowBlue | And yet in 2019 some people enthusiastically voted to make Jeremy Corbyn Prime Minister. A man currently suspended from his own party whip because of his role in antisemitism. Some people abstained from voting because it was a choice between an incompetent racist or a racist incompetent. So yeah. Good and bad people on both sides. I'd like to think you have more in common with people like Ken Clarke or Rory Stewart than you do with Ken Livingstone and Chris Williamson. I hope you'd agree. |
The point falls apart a little when you consider that Clarke and Stewart have both been purged by the current Tory leadership. I think historically and traditionally there are decent people on both sides but that just isn’t really the case at the moment. Have you seen the standard of the cabinet? Or of the 2019 intake? The tories have gone the same way as the GOP, they’ve sacrificed any pretence at decency in favour of stoking hatred and division. Could you name me a dozen high profile Tory MP’s who you would consider to be ‘good people’ and whose voting record supports it?

Yeah. I'm not disagreeing that this current incarnation of the Tory party isn't overloaded with some of the very worst, whilst the more moderate one nation Tories have been purged. It's why I left in 2017 and didn't vote for them in 2017. That is something that has only happened recently. Look how quick Starmer is clearing the decks of the antisemites and cranks in Labour. This could easily happen with the Tories post Johnson. My point is more general that it's an immature student view that all Tories bad, all labour good. It's not that black and white. The person you want to vote for really is the person the right wing press hate the most. Do/say/think the opposite of what they say most the time and the world will fix itself.

I agree. There are several likeable Tories. Sadly in Ipswich, and in Downing Street, we have two awful ones.

Good job I didn't say it was a stunning success then! Wasn't meaning to get into a long-winded debate, just pointing out that there is some cut-through. Not as much as we'd like of course, but all hope is not lost yet.

I'd like to think we have mutual respect despite being on opposite ends of the political divide. This whole left good v right bad argument seems to have spilled over from the US. That may be why Sprucey is going down this particular route. Most people I know who go into politics do so for the very best of reasons. There used to be mutual respect on both sides. Many politicians on the left and right becoming lifelong friends. [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 18:34]

Well, I have zero hope that the current version of Starmer and the current version of the Labour Party are going to be a positive for this country. I’ll have hope when they stop the triangulation b@ll@cks and replace it with something hopeful, forward-thinking and relevant in their offering. Currently they’re so far behind the curve they think the road is straight ahead.

Genuine question for you Koonters. If the current inclination of the Labour party isn't in line with your political views, and in your opinion it hasn't been for serval decades, then wouldn't you be better off finding one that does? ie, the Greens perhaps? When did your views and those of the Labour Party last align? [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 18:44]

To be fair, when he does come up with a policy (not that often admittedly) there’s a clear pattern. Johnson ridicules at PMQ’s. Johnson implements exactly what Starmer suggested 3 weeks later. Johnson calls Starmer ‘Captain Hindsight’ when asked why he didn’t do it 3 weeks earlier. The media lap it up and so do the useful idiots who read/watch/listen to it. [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 19:01]

You assume that I’ve supported Labour for decades. No, not in the slightest. And the Greens have been my go-to even if it’s just been a protest vote. I’ve always been interested in Labour but largely unconvinced they really grasped the underlying social and economic issues and alternatives rather than the purely political ones. Corbyn’s Labour where the members’ voices were finally heard brought that focus back to where it should be and away from the game of politics. Milliband felt better too but like John Smith before, I was never that sure of what they were committed to delivering. I’m not suddenly flipping out because of Starmer. This is just me reacting to seeing normal service resumed.

So in reality you are wishing that One Direction would sound like Pink Floyd. It's not going to happen. And the Green vote shouldn't be a protest vote. If more people in the Labour movement went to the Greens, instead of trying to change Labour, then they could be a real force. As they are in the EU. edit. Of course, if British politics was more like that of continental Europe then the Tories would have split into a pro EU centre right party, with Blairties from Labour. Whilst Labour would have split into a centre left and left wing party. And with PR they would all have seats around the table. [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 19:03]

Yeah but I didn't repeat antisemitic tropes used by Pete Willsman, accuse the Israeli lobby of manufacturing the Labour antisemtism issue or continued to defend people like Chris Williamson. So if my take on politics is consistently awful and untrustworthy, yours is swirling around in the sewer.
