‘The Dig’ - thoughts on film and location 10:15 - Feb 1 with 2698 views | unstableblue | Being a Deben sailor and finding the area north of Woodbridge/Bawdsey up to Orford one of my favourite parts of the world. And a frequent visitor to Sutton Hoo, was interested in watching the Netflix film. I enjoyed but it could have been so much better. There were some great landscapes, good to see the Ramsholt round tower church and some the stretches after the Rocks. But the story is better and some of the issues more interesting than they made of them. And why you need to go on the Butley foot ferry when cycling from Diss is beyond me!?! But it did look nice. Still recommend, and Fiennes does a pretty good Suffolk accent. With regard the plane scene- did you know an American bomber did ditch in the river in WW2 at Ramsholt: https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/event-held-in-ramsholt-to-remember-crew-of-american-

‘The Dig’ - thoughts on film and location on 11:22 - Feb 1 by unstableblue | You got married there - Superb! literally one of my favourite spots in the world! that and Shingle Street. You know the old boy who manages the moorings at Ramsholt is a big Town fan - his beached boat was burnt down, now sits in a caravan as his office. Sat with him listening to a town game once, waiting for some weather to go through before getting back to the boat. |
I know who you mean - is his name George? - but I don't think I've talked to him.

‘The Dig’ - thoughts on film and location on 11:00 - Feb 1 by factual_blue | Also bear in mind that Basil lived, to quote the film, 'in a village just outside Diss'. Or Rickinghall to be more precise. Another fourteen miles to ride when you get to Diss. And 2.5 hours or thereabout from Sutton Hoo, according to Google Maps. |
14 miles? It is for a return journey.

Yes George, dear old boy, harbour master Ramsholt. Must be in his 90s. Knows those moorings and the Deben very well. Always has BBC Suffolk on for a game. We were out in the North Sea few years back, heading into Woodbridge Haven buoy and the mouth of the Deben, saw this plume of black smoke inland, came up river and were convinced the pub* had gone up... got to Ramsholt and there was George and locals watching his old beached boat (his office) smolder. *Ramsholt arms food has gone downhill of late

‘The Dig’ - thoughts on film and location on 12:45 - Feb 1 with 433 views | Churchman | It’s a lovely part of the world. My dad lives in Waldringfield the other side of the Deben and his brother in Woodbridge so mooching around both sides of the river in that lovely part of the world when I visit is always a privilege. I’ve seen the Sutton Hoo artefacts in the British Museum and obviously SH itself a few times. I kind of feel the artefacts belong in Sutton Hoo, though I know the security and associated cost would preclude that. When I look at the Deben, winter or summer, I think of Anglo Saxons then Vikings rowing up the river. Take away the odd built up bits, I hope they’d recognise it.

Yeah, I'm a bit saddened that none of the artifacts are actually there, especially given they were purposely buried there. Now you have to travel 80 miles to see them, I'm sure they could have left a few bits on show there.

At the very least there should be a well funded museum of East Anglia. This region as an incredibly rich artifact record. Sure the British museum as warehousing full of artifacts that originate from the area an would be of a great interest locally. There's also a lot of impressive artifacts held locally in small museums such as the Cambridge University museum or in BSE that might serve a better purpose being displayed in one place celebrating the history of the region

It would be huge boost for the region if they could play with the whole Anglo Saxon/Viking history. There was a push a few years back to try and increase tourism and they identified places like Sutton Hoo, West Stow, Easton Farm Park etc to provide an all year round attractions. It went a bit flat though. A good Museum of East Anglia near Woodbridge would be great with shuttle busses to Sutton Hoo. Maybe with a replica henge, another amazing discovery which we haven't made the most of.

Had our reception in a marquee at the Arms, back when Patrick was the landlord. Didn't get down there last summer unfortunately.
