Anyone else struggling to focus on work? (n/t) on 10:00 - Feb 4 with 396 views | Herbivore | A bit. I've got lots on and I am ploughing through it but at the same time it's hard not to get distracted. Definitely have working from home fatigue, seeing the same four walls all day every day.

From the calls that Mrs O is on for most of the day, her company sounds far more interesting than what I'm doing and they're a bunch of insurers and accountants!!

It's mad to think some of us haven't seen our colleagues in a whole year at this point. I do miss the social aspect of it but happy enough to trade that for the commute. Although Friday lunchtime beer and moan fests at the local are sorely missed. As for being distracted, yes and no I guess. Been too busy to be distracted in the main but have plenty of books to be getting on with, which is probably a much better distraction than watching Jeremy Kyle repeats. Not that I'd do that, of course.

It's coming up to a year since WFH has been enforced by my employer, and I think I've been in the office twice in that period, both over the summer of course when it was permitted. I really do think a balance of office and home is the way forward, it's what I was doing pre Covid anyway and as you say it allows for that social interaction, the Friday lunch time pint, and face to face meetings are far more effective than Zoom from my experience. Those water cooler chats and unofficial transfer of knowledge moments, overhearing a colleague etc shouldn't be underestimated either. It's hard to keep people up to date when we're all working remotely. I had a nice routine before, saving certain tasks for wfh where I could get my head down free from distraction, and optimising my office time. The difference to my work life balance between commuting 5 days vs. 3, with rarely doing 2 consecutively was enormous. Hopefully that's what we get back to.

I started a new job in August so not met my colleagues at all yet. Been home working from day one, which has been really weird to be fair.

Saw an article today saying 20% of people want to WFH full-time after the pandemic. I don't think many businesses are going to go for that (some will of course) but in general everyone should enjoy a better mix with at least a day at home a week, preferably two. I wouldn't actually want to do 100% WFH for the reasons you've cited. SB

Same here, was working one or two days a week from home previously so this is no great shakes really. Although a few times since then there have been days where communication between team members has been bad, causing us to be slow to react. Usually I could just corral everyone needed into a meeting room, discuss and delegate and get it 'actioned' (Americans, innit). Yesterday a similar event happened and I couldn't get half the people involved as they were busy on other calls or simply slow to respond, whereas usually I'd just bowl up to their desk. It's an interesting balancing act. I'm in favour of more WFH, not just for personal wellbeing but environmental reasons too, but there are some times where being in the office is simply more efficient, though I guess it depends on your line of work. Been a bit of a pain onboarding new team members as well, especially on the social side. As I don't have a webcam half my new recruits have been working for the invisible man for months so will be a bit weird to see them in person after working together for months already!
