Cricket Day 4 06:45 - Feb 8 with 2021 viewsgainsboroughblue

England 246 ahead. Just need to quieten the Indians post lunch enthusiasm down. Post a lead 400 plus and get bowling.

Pitch seems a lot more difficult for batting now.

Yes, definitely need more runs. I miss the days when India didn't bat beyond the top six but it's made them a much better team that they do.

Perfect entertainment for a cold, snowy day.

SA should get the 151 runs they need to win the second Test in Pakistan in today's other match.

Ah, Sibley's gone. 32/2, 273 ahead.

Three of the four last test matches that have not involved England have all involved unlikely fourth innings successful chases (assuming SA do chase 151 down successfully). Makes me slightly nervous!

You know what I'm like so I'm not going to make a prediction. Regardless though, it's been brilliant test cricket and great to see it on proper telly.

Yes, recent history and Pant will mean England might want 450. Will leave only a small amount of time to get into the Indians tonight.

I think we'll see a different India in the second test. I think they know the three spinners approach was a mistake. Can see Pant playing as a batsman only as, for all his batting prowess, he has been a car crash behind the stumps. Not sure if Jadeja is going to be fit, they won't want to drop Sundar.

Nadeem has been a dreadful selection really, never seen a spinner overstep the line as much.

Root getting stuck in now.

I think I'd be confident (reasonably, this is England after all) that 420+ would make it highly unlikely we lose but we saw in Australia recently this Indian team don't know when they're beaten.

Could be a great finish.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

At least 420. If Root and Stokes stay in for at least 45 mins together, we could get there very quickly. Suspect Buttler will jump above Pope in the order if not.

Need to ensure we are in a position to take the new ball (if needed) around tea/not long after tomorrow.

If India pull this off, you'd just have to hold your hands up and say 'well played.'

Edit. Fook sake.

Good thing it isn't a tight chase if the umpires are going to give wickets like that one against Pope, fortunately we hadn't burnt through all our reviews.

Two quick wickets after lunch for Pakistan and that one is right in the balance again.

Almost like they are inviting ICC betting integrity unit to take a look! Ashwin went like 50 tests without bowling one and now is approaching double figures it’s very odd!

I’d want at least 400 but 370 might be enough this pitch is not getting any better and I really don’t think the Indian batsman fancy lining up against Jofra especially as one might shoot up and the next shoot along the floor.

Yep. Scored a decent mount of runs in that session but the 5 wickets lost probably shaved off another 40-50. You can't really say that the wickets we lost were as a result of over indulgence on our batsmen's part either. Batting fourth is going to be very difficult here.

I think maybe pulling out at a 400 lead would be reasonable.

Even though we've seen some big chases from India and elsewhere lately the way this pitch is starting to look I think we already have enough runs in the bag. I'd be comfortable us coming off at 400 and giving ourselves a decent bit of time this evening to get stuck into them and then a full day tomorrow.

Was pointed out in the commentary yesterday, with the 4th umpire now video checking for NBs, a lot more are being picked up than before.

That’s a very good point and I forgot about that. Definitely think we’re being more aggressive here in the search for quick runs. Think 400 and we’ll pull out.

We’ve just plodded along since losing Pope.

Hopefully Buttler will now get after the spinner.

Yeah, it's pointless us being out there if we're not scoring runs. To be honest a chase of 380 looks very, very, very tough on this pitch, knock off a quick 20-30 more and have a dart at them this evening.

Run rate now below four.

Seems a bit pointless if we are just eating up overs. And it's not as if India are rushing through them.

20 penalty runs in game for slow over rates would kick India up the backside. 9 overs in nearly 50 minutes.

Problem is, our aggression has evaporated since Pope's wicket. Also think the Indians are keeping Bess on strike, as he isn't able to score.
