A couple of theories as to why Lambert's still here 10:05 - Feb 21 with 2770 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

1. A new manager is lined up... but he has a 'watching brief' for a couple of games. This has happened before (Lambert did it himself) and would be easy to do secretly with iFollow.

2. The takeover rumours are true. I'm sure ME can afford to sack PL if he wants... but if a takeover is imminent, why would he waste his own money doing it? Let the new owners decide what they want to do with Lambert. It's not ME's problem anymore if he's selling.

I agree, as others have posted, that it's baffling as to why this is still going on, and these are the two best scenarios I can come up with. I don't subscribe to the 'he just doesn't care' theory. His kids being supporters will prevent that - and from his appearances at games and the messages he's put out, I believe he does (he's just been crap at running it).

There also could be some merit in that he's just too busy with his other businesses right now... although it only takes a short chat with Lee O'Neill on the phone about what's been going on to come to a conclusion that this isn't working. And even if he is busy, I'm sure he'd watch the games Saturdays for a couple of hours.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Personally, on this issue the simplest theory is the correct one - Evans hasn’t a clue.

Not really a theory I know.

Or theory 3, is Evans is perfectly content and comfortable with the current situation and doesn't feel the need to change the manager?

It's an awful thought, but perfectly plausible.

I think this is more plausible than the two theories put forward in the OP.

My heart says takeover/new manager my head is starting to conform to the idea that he is happy with the status quo.

Disastrous.

Neither of those explain why Lambert seemed so perky in his post-match presser. More likely is the case that Evans is loathe to sack him due to financial reasons or not wanting to lose face after giving him such a public and resounding vote of confidence. A 0-0 with Oxford seems to be justification for keeping Lambert here longer in Evans' eyes. It's a disgrace but that's where we are.

Do we think Lambert spoke to Evans between the match finishing and the post match media duties?

If not he was more perky, because of the conversation on Friday, and knows that he is in a win / win situation - Either stays or gets a big pay off.

My theory, still is that Evans does not want to pay off the contract and we are lumbered.

I think the most simple theory is definitely the incompetence one, probably that Evans doesn't like changing managers doesn't really understand why it's not working so doesn't really know what to do.

If there were a bit of interest in the club at the moment that would also explain why he's let things slide, potential new owners would want to make their own decisions, so it doesn't make that much sense for Evans to get rid of Lambert because it would be difficult to hire a new manager if there was a chance the club could change hands imminently.

My fear is that he’s happy with things as they are too. The reality is that he has hamstrung himself giving Lambert a long contract. I doubt he has the will to bear the cost of replacing him.

Evans has been happy with mediocrity as an aim for years. If he couldn’t back MM when there was a real chance of the Premier League in 2015, he isn’t going to do more than the bare minimum now.

I suspect he is quite happy in the current league or one or two lower. Sweat those assets further, cut more fat from costs (Academy, training ground, squad and staff reduction), and / or hope somebody comes along and buys him out. How might that work for him? No idea because the club is just a shell now; a name from the past so I have no idea why anyone would buy it.

I know this post is just speculative rubbish. I am just desperate for something to change to bring better times. This club has been an important part of my life. I miss it and want to look forward to games, to identify and connect with it. I can’t do that when it’s owned by someone like Evans.

How are you so confident there's no takeover? Unless you're ME, or very close to him, you have no idea either way.

Also, the season's not dead. It's got a bad cough, perhaps, but it's not dead to a new, competent manager.

Because, people connected with the club would know of something if there was and anyone I've spoken to knows absolutely nothing on this front.

I'm not saying Evans doesn't want to sell, he definitely would if something met his valuation but his valuation is something that no one will pay and any previous interest has ended before it basically started.

The £40 million number that I've seen some mention here is not to far wide of the mark and Evans is clueless if he thinks he can get that for mid table champ club let alone a struggling L1 club.

As I've posted elsewhere. Lambert is here for the season.

Evans is disappointed that we find ourselves where we are, but not to the extent he wants to have to make a huge financial pay-out on Lambert's contract. Unless the players actually down tools and stop playing for him (which is evident that they did not v Oxford) Lambert will be staying.

Depressing, but that is what we face.
