Pathetic question about MOTs from a newbee 14:05 - Mar 24 with 3684 views | giant_stow | I've never needed to buy an MOT before: do you own up to the problems you know about on the car and if you've gone past the renewal date, does the garage have to report you?

Pathetic question about MOTs from a newbee on 16:57 - Mar 24 by Coastalblue | Could be an open top car ride on the way home too. |
The guy doing it is only round the corner, so if he cuts the roof off, at least it will be a short trip.

I've got one for you. If a car went for an MOT and the passenger door was missing, would you pass or fail it? Why? Cheers

Pathetic question about MOTs from a newbee on 14:09 - Mar 24 by giant_stow | the plot thickens... I think my wheel bearings may be screwed. They make a kind of grinding metalic noise and someone told me it might that. I don;t really want the wheels to fall off, but it might just be that its an old car... |
Wheel bearings would clunk, it sounds like your pads - and that's a fail. Your car can be a pile of sh1te and keep breaking down but that won't fail an MOT, it will only fail if it is dangerous. I don't know if these rules still apply but for example*** Cracked windscreen in driver sight - fail. No windscreen - pass. Dodgy spare wheel - fail. No spare wheel - pass ***Rules may have changed over the years. Just drive the bloody thing in, bung the tester £50 in his pocket and stop being a fanny.

Pathetic question about MOTs from a newbee on 15:22 - Mar 24 by Coastalblue | I think it's one of life's little bonuses when you can find a garage or mechanic that you trust, not something I've managed to do since moving to London. It's a lot simpler when you have somebody good and trustworthy that will give you decent advice as opposed to having to be second guessing people or being aware of the chances of being 'caught' |
I had a good one in Brixton under the railway arches. By 'good' I mean I use to take my car there for an MOT, pay them £30 and they gave me a certificate. I'm convinced on one occasion I got back from my pint-while-I-wait at the Duke of Edinburgh and the car was in the exact same spot I left it. But back then I was skint and less worried about it being a death trap.

I would do neither. Why? Because I am not a trained MOT inspector. I suspect there is no requirement for their to be a passenger door in place. There are very specific safety features that MOTs check for. However, some of the free retest garages will find work to be done that is questionable. I would say you need to find a garage/mechanic that you trust (worth paying a little more for as often the cheapest are the ones who will find unnecessary work or simply aren't very good so won't pick up things you would want dealt with. Get them to do a proper service and the MOT. They will often put it through an MOT before doing the service so they know things that need dealing with before doing it and then have the retest after the service.

What's the point? Take it for an MOT and get them to do any work that needs to be done while it's sitting there.

yep, no problem we are all human etc my comment was directed at the lads early thought about ignoring a problem with the car - and I added to what others had advised i.e. get it fixed while you can (apologies accepted and appreciated)
Pathetic question about MOTs from a newbee on 10:16 - Mar 25 with 787 views | soupytwist | If you have one near you, taking the car to a local council MOT testing centre is a good idea because they have no vested interest in creating work for themselves. They will only fail it on what it should fail on. Drawbacks are you have to make a specific time appointment and wait while it's done, you can't just leave it there while you go off and do something else. I take my car to the one in Chelmsford. The bloke there will also mention anything that he spots which isn't a fail but might be worth addressing. There's a list here - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-mot/#hidden And there are certain things that you can check and fix yourself probably. Don't let it fail for something stupid like a number plate bulb being blown when it's easy to check and remedy that yourself. [Post edited 25 Mar 2021 10:20]
