De Gea vs Henderson 22:58 - May 26 with 2256 views | Chris_ITFC | It feels odd to substitute a goalkeeper before a shoot-out, but if you had two strikers with such a contrasting record, you'd switch them in a heartbeat. Why? Henderson Pens saved - 8 Pens unsaved - 11 De Gea Pens saved - 11 Pens unsaved - 53 including 25 in a row before tonight.

Exactly - we can literally remember the times it's ever been done. Yet every team would bring good penalty TAKERS on (Mata, Telles), yet they're only involved in ONE penalty. The goalkeeper is involved in half.

I imagine though that it's quite rare that your back up keeper is significantly better at saving penalties than your number 1. De Gea's record at saving pens is horrible though and it showed in the shootout, he looked like he had no clue how you're even meant to save a penalty. Henderson on the other hand has an excellent record. It should have been a no brainer.

The funny thing is though the Villarreal keeper was worse, he just has an inner striker's instinct

Not sure I'd agree he was worse. He did the right things but seemed to have wrists made of wafer. De Gea looked like the tall kid who has been asked to play in goal at a kick about but who has never actually played football before.

De Gea vs Henderson on 08:37 - May 27 with 1485 views | vilanovablue | Whilst your point is valid the fact Utd were awful for 120 minutes and OGS left his albeit lesser lights on the bench when he made his first sub he bought on Fred for crying out loud leaving Mata and James on the bench. I'll admit Mata is getting on and James isn't world class but they surely both offer more attacking options than Fred.
De Gea vs Henderson on 08:38 - May 27 with 1478 views | Wickets | What has happend to De Gea ,ok you are not going to blame a Keeper for losing a penalty shootout, but i agree he looked totally lost almost gave up after the first couple . A few years ago when he came to English football he had an aura of almost invincability about him now he looks a shadow of his former self .I suppose the many high profile mistakes of the last couple of years have taken their toll .

Good point, like the OP leans on I didn't suspect De Gea would save any of the 5, let alone think he wouldn't save 11.

Reminds me of what my Grandad always says 'he's paid 100 grand a week and they are saying he can't use his left foot?!'. [Post edited 27 May 2021 9:32]

That's what I thought - he seemed to use the Shilton tactic of seeing which way they went and try and save it after ball past him. To then top it off with a dreadful penalty summed it up

Fair assessment. | |

Their goalie definitely had biscuit wrists. He got to two of the penalties quite comfortably but didn't stop them going in.

England had 5 players on the bench for the Italia 90 s/f, which was all you were allowed at the time. Chris Woods was the reserve goalkeeper so Beasant could not have been used. Even if he had, I doubt Robson would have made so dramatic a switch as the criticism he would have faced if he had done that & England lost would have been unimaginable.

Agree. If Henderson is in goal he definitely saves at least one if not two of Villarreal's first five penalties. Should have hooked off De Gea who hasn't saved a pen since 2016.

I agree, it's a bit of an insult to De Gea though - he might never be able to shake off that reputation as the keeper who can't save penalties after that, which if Man Utd are planning on selling him this summer won't help!

I remember Argentina had a goalkeeper called Sergio Goycochea. He was a decent goalkeeper but nothing special. However he was very good at saving penalties. When Argentina won two shoot-outs to reach the 1990 World Cup final, it was down to him. Watching the penalties live you felt he was going to save them all.

I went to the Div 1 play off Final, ,courtesy of UBS, between Palace(?) and Leicester. It went to extra time and O'Neill brought on his sub keeper right at the end. He never touched the ball as Leicester immediately scored the winner.
