Grant Wards debut 21:46 - May 28 with 4206 views | OwainG1992 | Can anyone think of an impact made on his debut by anybody as good or as exciting as his a few years ago? Clearly boredom has taken over but got me thinking. Perhaps someone who on first viewing had you thinking wow we've got a talent right there!

Grant Wards debut on 21:57 - May 28 by Beattie78 | I was at the game in 1967 when Colin Viljoen scored a hat trick on his debut. 4-2 win against Portsmouth. |

Grant Wards debut on 06:37 - May 29 by Fixed_It | The day I became a Town fan. 6 year old me saw it on Match of the Week - first game I can remember watching. Colin Viljoen is to blame! |
Dozzell (father & son) - Jason was before my time but a 16 year old youth team graduate scoring on debut has to be up there, and Andre’s was extra special as his dad had done it before him. I think Grant Ward’s was the best I’ve seen, although another that stands out was Shefki Kuqi away at Watford. I remember he came off the bench and scored right in front of us in the away end, kinda immediately felt like he was gunna be a real player for us.

Grant Wards debut on 07:57 - May 29 with 1333 views | Churchman | How about David Johnson (the second). Joined 13 Nov 97, scored away at Wolves on debut. In 31 appearances, he scored 22 goals that season. Excellent player.
Grant Wards debut on 08:18 - May 29 with 1318 views | Barneycurley | David Johnson away at Wolves, scored a scrappy goal but looked the goods, at that level he was insane. Ended up being a half decent player!

How funny I just scrawled through! I think we signed him that week from Bury, went straight in to the team and that was that

We played away at Crewe the previous month, created no end of chances but couldn’t score. Johnson made such a difference. Didn’t David Gregory score a hat-trick on his debut as well? Albeit in the Simod cup.

First half too I reckon? Seem to remember being in the North Stand and all his goals were in The Churchmans?

No. Bowditch made his debut at Norwich aged 16 & made 3 subsequent appearances that season, all from the bench, I think. The Watford hat trick was about a year after his debut.

I was aware it was a year after, but remember hearing someone bragging that about how it was Bowditch’s full home debut or something like that.

Bowling in the changing room afterwards he was full of “that’s what I do!” At the top of his lungs as well as saying “that was piss easy” amongst other stuff. Must be more to it but that turned a lot of people off.

Most footballers who make it to the top have lots of confidence, which may also be interpreted as arrogance. My family's personal experience of Dean Bowditch was very positive. My son was away mascot & Bowditch looked after him & took him around the dressing room for autographs.

Grant Wards debut on 23:05 - May 28 by Churchman | John Wark made his debut in 75 in the 3rd replay against Leeds playing as Centre Half. He was marking Allan Clarke who gave him a bit of a nightmare stamping, nipping, pushing, verbally abusing and punching, you name it - the usual Leeds pleasantries. Wark stuck to his task pretty well, through Clarke did score but oddly the nastiness stopped middle of the second half. Many years later I heard the reason. According to Wark, Allan Hunter sidled over and said ‘one more and ill break your f–-ing leg’. He would have done too. Mariner’s debut was devastating and the best I saw from an Ipswich player, but then I am a bit biased. [Post edited 28 May 2021 23:11]

One of my first matches and a wonderful one. As you say warky got abuse from Clark... can still see Clarke’s elbow digging into his ribs in a lined up wall. Woods curler of a winner was magic as was the crying of two Leeds supporting boys sat just behind us...

It was his 'full' debut from memory. He'd been on as sub a few times prior to that. A tidy hat-trick it was too. He was still dropped next game though.

Absolutely. I remember being in and around the changing room after a match as a kid and thinking that Mich D’Avray was the rudiest person I had ever met. He was South African though so it could have easily just been that.

Yes, according to Wark, the first thing Clarke did was spit in his face. No surprise that an experienced, cynical pro like Clarke would try to intimidate a 17 year old making his debut; no surprise either that "Big Al" warned him off.
