I think he’s good enough, but his brain is fried. That’s what test cricket does. It’s a big test for him in our second innings now, he needs a score.

Crawley on 16:31 - Jun 10 with 1204 views | N2_Blue | I rather feared for England's batting line up before this series. Dreadfully inexperienced, out of form and lacking in any conviction. Not surprised by these batting performances. Some of these players should be no where near a test cricket 11. Shambles. I think 7 years undefeated at home will end in the next 2-3 days.

NZ have still got to bat yet. After both sides have posted a score we’ll have a better idea.

Not convinced really - he might still come good but think he needs to go back to county cricket and score consistent runs which he hasn't really done yet - he was picked at a time when the selectors were quite anti-county cricket and were trying to be a bit too clever. Not sure there's loads of other options out there though! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

even if we bowl out Kiwis cheaply twice and end up winning test it doesn't detract from the fact that England have huge problems with it's batting, especially without Stokes

The issues we have are with Crawley and Pope. There’s no doubt Buttler and Stokes improves our batting options.

The good thing for Crawley is after this test there’s a bit of a gap until the next test. He can go back and play some white ball cricket and clear his head.

Crawley on 17:00 - Jun 10 with 1114 views | Steve_M | A bit of a mix of inexperience, poor form and some very good bowling throughout this lineup. Crawley perhaps needs a bit more patience to stay in and then play. Pope was annoying too, looked comfortable, then a crap shot when he was good for a half-decent score. Only Root looks entirely assured of a place although I think Burns has answered a few questions and, maybe, Sibley too. In that context good to see Dan Lawrence get some runs. 300+ would still be ok but a long way to go from here to get there.

Crawley on 08:55 - Jun 11 with 959 views | IpswichKnight | Burns looks in good form, Once Lawrence gets in he’s a class player but will look horrible for 20-30 balls. Pope is like Ian Bell will look classier than Bradman and Tendulkar but get out when set. Stokes and Butler ease back in at 5 and 7 with Lawrence at 6. Still doesn’t answer our problems with who goes in at 3? I am very much looking forward to Stone and Wood coming in together later today, possible we might even see Jofra, Stone and Wood against India later this summer, have we ever had 3 genuine fast bowlers play at the same time? Edited - Yes we have Flintoff, Harmison and Jones and they rattled through the Aussies! [Post edited 11 Jun 2021 8:57]

David Malan might be the answer there. I know some see him as a white ball specialist - particular 20/20 - but he's come back to Yorkshire and posted a huge 100. Probably right to give Crawley time away to play some county cricket, but not writing him off just yet. Just shows you the huge step up from the county game to the test arena, the bowlers in test cricket are just relentless, you get no respite as a batsmen. Soon as they see a weakness they are on it like a pack of wolves.

Said England would be on the end of a first home test series defeat in 7 years. I thought we'd put up a bit more fight that this however. Woeful. Ashes is going to be miserable in the winter isn't it.

I reckon we've got a hiding from India to suffer first.

There’s no doubt that NZ have been better than us in all facets of the game. NZ vs. India will be a very intriguing test match. Both squads strong, but they offer something a little different. We’ve been made to look a very poor side in comparison. Is that down to confidence though?

It is ability. England - especially in the batting department - currently look every inch a County Select XI rather than an international team.

He's like Crawley. His scoring shots are also the ones which repeatedly get him out in test cricket.

Denly and Vince were crap and rightly dropped, but they weren't as crap as some of the current batting line-up We really so seem lost for batting options.

Bairstow, Woakes, Foakes, Buttler, Stokes all improve this side. That should be it for Bracey. Anyone can have a bad start and allow nerves to get to them, but seriously...

That’s the thing, we want wholesale changes but for who or whom? There’s really not many in the county game putting their hand up to be selected.
