Confused. 13:03 - Jun 22 with 1371 views | TheBoyBlue | How come Scotland can’t finish above the Czech Republic on account of the Czech’s beating them, even if they finish level on points and with a better goal difference. Yet Denmark finished above Finland in the same scenario? What obvious thing am I missing?

Ah, that would explain it. Thank you.

Confused. on 13:15 - Jun 22 with 1204 views | mojo | Going back to the Finland/Denmark game if common sense had applied, the decision would have been taken away from the two teams, the game would have been replayed and I think there would have been a different outcome. I have some sympathy for Russia in this situation.

almost. 2 teams is head-to-head, 3 teams is still head to head, but between the 3 of them. so in the group c example, you take out the games against belgium

The different outcome would have likely been Denmark beating Finland, so I don't know what it would have changed for Russia.

If three teams finish level the results against the other, fourth side, are discounted. So Denmark, Russia and Finland all won three points against each other, Denmark had a GD for 4-2, Finland 1-1 and Russia 2-4. Head to head is a good system and much better than goal difference.

They’d have finished 3rd and still have a chance of qualifying

Unlikely to qualify with 3 points and negative gd

Yes unlikely, but more chance than they have now! Worth adding that I don’t really agree they can feel hard done by by the decision to finish the Denmark match so quickly - just pointing out the posters logic

Don't think it would work in a 46 game season but it's perfect for these tournaments. In some of these groups you have one real minnow who everybody spanks, it shouldn't come down to how many they do it by if the other games are tight.
