Why is Rice so highly rated? 19:29 - Jun 22 with 2315 views | nodge_blue | He does the basics ok and protects the back 4. But I don’t see a great player there. He’s like Cole Skuce. If he dictated play more like a Pirlo I’d get it. Have I just not seen him enough?

Why is Rice so highly rated? on 19:41 - Jun 22 by Kentish_Tractor | There are 2 types of football fan. Those that understand the importance of a holding midfielder, and those that don't. Rice is an integral part of West Ham and England. Screens the back 4, makes tackles, covers opposition midfield runs, doubles up. But most importantly, he allows the attackers to push on, knowing he is covering behind them. |
There's a 3rd actually, there's the one who appreciates the importance of that role in a side, but can still question the effectiveness of the guy playing it. Seems to be this weird thing in that position only, where if you criticise a performance you 'don't understand' the position. Must be the only position on the pitch where the occupier has never had a bad game.

Think that's a bit small minded. Most understand the need for a holding midfielder but im yet to be overly impressed by Rice. Holding midfielders have still got to be able to pass the ball forward, Henderson is head and shoulders above Rice in that respect. If you cant pass forwards regularly, you need a bit of drive to break lines occasionally as Kante, Fernandinho, Casemiro and even Kovacic do. He's ok but I wouldnt say Rice is any better than say, a Ben White, for example.

He was dominated by his Czech team mate yesterday, just like Mount was dominated by his Scottish team mate on Friday. Not saying either are rubbish but they haven’t had a good tournament so far.

Previously Henderson and Phillips have seemed too cautious for England and it's been Rice pushing the team on - I can only assume this is now what Southgate wants from him
