Isn't the atmosphere at Playford Road going to be toxic? 09:33 - Jun 24 with 3520 views | gordon | Any number of the players we're trying to bomb out could just say well actually I've got a contract here, I'm settled in Ipswich personally, and I'd quite like to wait and see if there's going to be a change in manager by October which could see me back in the frame.

Isn't the atmosphere at Playford Road going to be toxic? on 10:49 - Jun 24 by Guthrum | Tho the likes of Kenlock, Dobra and Lankester are not going to be on massive wages, with only a year - or, in Dobra's case, two - left on their contracts, so it wouldn't cost that much. Seems odd to be haggling over £50k or so after all the players we've released who might have also been sold. I think you're right that Dobra could be worth a better fee than most, but there also seems to be some noises (and comments from Phil) that he's more likely to be staying, too. |
It may not be a massive amount but why spend 5/6 figures paying up contracts if you think you can find someone to take them off your hands? And if that doesn’t come through then you can pay up their contract anyway. Not the same as the released players for whom we would have had to have offered new contracts, and then be on the hook for that amount to terminate (Jackson being the exception as presumably deemed valuable enough to take the risk) We’ve got some experienced operators in place now with the likes of Ashton in place - so hardly a surprise we’re being a bit hard nosed on that front

Isn't the atmosphere at Playford Road going to be toxic? on 10:55 - Jun 24 by Ryorry | If there are only 11 first-teamers remaining, isn't it just a matter of pragmatism to have them training with the U23s - otherwise what training games are they going to do - 5-a side? |
There won't be any training games for at least a week or two, it'll be fitness mainly first. Dont forget, just because they are seperate lists, doesn't also mean they won't come together when it comes to arranging small sided games.

Isn't the atmosphere at Playford Road going to be toxic? on 10:40 - Jun 24 by itfcjoe | Once players fully graduate from the 23s to the first team they very, very rarely go back, if ever - unless there is a big issue. To state that it can easily be argued that Lankester and Dobra can be justified in being there misses that point, if we had 22-24 players in the first team then would be easier to argue - but that simply isn’t the case. They are first teamers, that they are down there is as noteworthy as Downes, Jackson etc being there |
Brett McGavin has made almost as many League starts as Dobra, yet his inclusion in the U23s has passed without comment. I think that eleven is nothing more than a cadre, which will be added to by signings and, probably, (re-)promotions from that U23 list as pre-season goes on. With such an extensive reset of the squad, things were never going to all be in place by late June. Agree, it is noteworthy, hence the debate over its significance for the future of those players. It could be that Cook doesn't want to give them a status he doesn't yet think they warrant.

A cadre? Or is it that the few existing players remaining are the cadre which is being added to by a cohort of players who Cook knows and has worked with before, i.e. they are schooled by his training to employ a certain set of tactics.

But then, KD speaks very highly of Cook so it’s tough to see he would£NT know and have agreed with this. I’m confused tbh.

It will concentrate the minds of those responsible for getting the new players in Is suppose! First week will,be mainly fitness work won’t it so they have a week or more before numbers become critical. If we don’t they them in then Inpesume some will need to be lifted from the u23’s.

One of KDs frustrations was 30+ players one day, 6 the next, disinterested first team players being poor role models to the younger players. Add in no communication from Lambert and the u23 coaches didn’t have the easiest time of it. I guess that in the good ole days when you had a proper reserve League (Combination League?) that’s where they’d go. I suppose that while the shake down, departure and acquisition continues, it’s going to be this way. I would hope KD and TB are aware of the plan, assuming there is one, and what will happen going forward. As you say, it’s all a bit confusing. I’m clinging on to the better top end structure in the club and the people occupying those positions being football people - or is that 2+2=35 logic?
