Sterling's record is pathetic, and apparently Grealish has only taken 1 and hit the bar (I haven't fact checked this).
Saka however has never taken a senior penalty so seemed weird he would have the 5th one. Strange.
I would definitley had Pickford as he seems like a goalie who could score them. |

Southgate is probably as good a judge as anyone when it comes to understanding his players..
He may have asked Sterling and Grealish, they may have said “Yes” but he would have seen their eyes and perhaps could see that the moment wasn’t right for them.
A lot can be said about looking someone in the eyes when it gets real and maybe with penalties definitely about to take place (I.e not a conversation at training) he had most faith in the 5 that he picked as felt they were best mentally ready for it |  | | |

He indicated this in an interview after - the 5 chosen were the 5 who had overall done best with practising penalties in training every day, he asked them all and they all said they were happy to take them.
People are saying Saka was too young to take one, however I remember an 18 year old Owen scoring one against Argentina in 98 and nobody mentioned it then.... |  |

Yeah think thats why Southgate didnt entertain the idea. Also might just be me but he reminds me of a player that might try the cheeky chip down the middle. Not what you want in a final imo.
