The actual subject of this post isn’t technically football but the context of it is so that’s why I have added it to the football threads.
The players who missed penalties last night have all been subjected to racist abuse on Twitter etc. I’m think the vast amount of abuse has been from anonymous accounts where a fake handle has been used and linked to the users alternative email address. Social Media companies have previously stated that it will be very hard to ban such users.
My question for any social media/ IT experts on here is - Is this actually the case? Or is it possible to track them down but it’ll simply take a lot of manpower?
Obviously such trolls can also be guilty of others forms of hatred such as homophobia etc not necessarily connected to football.

I've very low tolerance for racism - its some fcking cowardly business, particularly on social media.
If fools are stupid enough to run their racist mouths on SM, the larger part of me considers that they deserve all the subsequent consequences.
That said, I acknowledge the point that wider vigilantism is not particularly helpful.

If that was one of my employees I'd want to know - it's not acceptable, we have BAME people on our workforce and why should they have to work alongside someone with those views? How could I let someone with those views go into the house of BAME clients we have - the ultimate trust being given to someone, in my name, when they hold those views about them |  |

That is true. We inserted a clause into ours years ago after one of our more, erm, passionate analysts had a diference of opinion with a client on Twiter and called him a cõont. He no longer works for us. |  |

Yes worth remembering there have been some pretty bad cases of the internet trying to be helpful and well meaning but getting it very very wrong when it comes to identifying a wrong'un which can ruin an innocent person's life.
As Joe has pointed out it can get a bit daft (and nasty) when someone is publicly ridiculed for something they said or did when they were a teenager or whatever which is taking it too far but with stuff like this on balance it's fair to go in with a fairly strong tackle. Though by that I mean things like mass reporting of any racism to the appropriate places (though again I can understand why people take things into their own hands given some social media companies' historically flimsy response to these instances). |  |
