Have Ipswich ever had a firm? The type of firm that activity went looking for trouble?
I think I was in ‘The Swan’ around ten or so years ago when we played Birmingham and a few blokes run in and started talking amongst themselves about giving the Zulu Boys a fight. But seeing as they all looked around twelve I thought that they weren’t proper hooligans.
I remember as a child living in the General Gordon on Cox Lane when my parents managed it
State of the running battles outside Woolworths one Saturday lunchtime against Arsenal - can't say it was something that filled me with joy knowing a few hours later I'd be at the game , in the North Stand on my own with my mates as a 12 year old !!
Also seem to recall against United one year some away fans getting on the roof of the North Stand - oh and also the testimonial against Celtic when the Scots just pissed where they stood and the floodlights went out

Blue Coat Boy Pub next to the old bus station...I had many a sleepover in the late 60s as a young teen. My earliest memory of seeing a game in colour was there, 67/68 European cup final Utd v Benfica. Tenants had Boxer dogs out the back and remember the old Irish guys in the bar, though weren't they were more road construction guys than the gypsy type? Same era, late 60s early 70s, I can remember the landlady of the Gordon used to smoke those slim cigars. Certainly back then there was a group of Town fans that could 'mix it' with the other teams more 'trouble seeking' fans!

I had an after pub meal from Papa Goose. My skinny constitution used to Hansa, or light and bitter was not up to it. The pub itself became a kind of ‘no mans land’, ie if you went in to buy, behaved, you were fine. A passage in a mates book ‘Mod Ghosts’ recounts the early 80’s in there. Me and another mate once gave a helmet less Swallow and his mate lifts on our scooters from there to the Cock and Pie. How could we refuse after he asked!
Thanks for the link as that picture of the Pub is probably the best I've seen, although my earlier memory, the gates were a solid wood type. I was too young to go in the bar when I had my sleepovers, late 60s, as friends with 'Twiggy' and brother, the tenants kids. Vague memory now, going down in the cellar and drinking beer from the barrel taps! Guessing you did the same?
Think there was a group called the Spanner’s. Or is that my fading mind going wobbly?
Never really new who they were or saw a big mob but a "Spanners" union Jack rocked up at away games 85/86 with a few casually attired lads. As mentioned Norwich away was always the game, and a QPR home league cup game is one I always remember for it going off all over the ground 84/85 ish
