thinking about Ian Redford... 10:33 - Aug 2 with 1125 views | OriginalMarkyP | ...and how much I used to enjoy watching him turn out for us. Such a classy player. A real Rolls Royce. Obviously most of us know about the tragic, premature end to his life. But anyway, thinking about him made me google him.And i couldn't find one pic of him playing for Town. I think he played 68 games. There should be more pics of him.

thinking about Ian Redford... on 10:36 - Aug 2 with 1088 views | chicoazul | I saw something on Facebook about an Ipswich Rangers friendly in 80 I think this weekend and he was playing for Rangers. I also remember him playing for us under Lyall when he took over and for about a dozen games playing inside left he looked different class before sort of fading away and being replaced by Gavin Johnson.

thinking about Ian Redford... on 15:06 - Aug 2 with 773 views | The_Major | Definitely my favourite Duncan era player. Considering a few months before joining us he was playing against and beating Barcelona in the Nou Camp, how we managed to get him for about £200k even by 1988 prices is astonishing. The equivalent today would be a Championship Town picking up Mason Greenwood for under £10m. Had a couple of good years with us. And it should be pointed out that in Lyalls first season, by Christmas, he was top scorer. One injury later, and that was that, off t St Johnstone in the summer of 91. Would have been intriguing to see him in the 92 promotion team.
thinking about Ian Redford... on 15:44 - Aug 2 with 728 views | gainsboroughblue | Redford, Dozzell and Zondervan was a midfield trio to dream of in the second tier under Duncan. Unfortunately, our style of play never really got the best out of it. Redford was used by Duncan as a deep sitting centre midfielder for most of the time and would watch the ball sail over his head for most of the 90 mins. Let's not forget also, a Soviet international sweeper was deployed on the right wing. Lyall got more out of him when he was in his favoured more advanced role but he kind of disappeared again after the cup defeat at Southampton, January 1991 and Steve Whitton came in. I recommend his book 'Raindrops keep falling on my head' if you haven't read it. The personal tragedies he had to overcome as a youngster were heart breaking and as it would seem given his premature end, maybe he never quite did. He was also completely deaf in one ear. He was definitely an idol North of the Border and if not for Strachan, Souness, McStay etc, would probably have had a few international caps to his name. Met him a few times and he was a genuinely lovely, intelligent guy. It's really sad to think of him and Dalian as two talented ITFC players from the last 30 odd years, no longer with us, both for tragic reasons.

I was lucky enough to know Ian through friends in Scotland and I can assure you we never saw the best of him here, for whatever reasons. But yes, a lovely guy from a very nice family and it was a real tragedy the way his life ended.

Redford's book also made clear what he thought of the football Duncan was encouraging Town to play at the time with, as you say, the ball sailing over his head most of the time.

Correct. I remember one passage where Redford basically got fed up with Duncan's instructions and not seeing the ball, and when he did get an opportunity, literally kicked it in frustration as hard and high as he could into the main stand at Fratton Park (I think). Duncan raced out of his dug out and joyfully shouted 'That's better Redders, well done son'.

thinking about Ian Redford... on 17:34 - Aug 2 with 636 views | Churchman | I remember Redford as a tidy, compact player. Good on the ball, not the most robust. I never felt at the time that we quite found the right position for him. In addition, We were a bit shambolic under Duncan who had no idea really. We could trample all over Stoke with a Sergei debuting out of position one week, the get hammered by Port Vale the next. I can’t remember whether it was fitness or that Lyall didn’t see him as a fit in his team; thought him a little lightweight, but his time here sort of faded away. Good player.
