How nice would it be if we could reintegrate Downes 10:27 - Aug 4 with 4649 viewsiamipswich

Seems as though interest has cooled on Flynn Downes in recent weeks. Given our lack of midfield options other than LE & RH, he would be absolutely perfect as a third CM in the squad. Maybe if he gets 90 minutes under his belt tonight for the 23's, we could see him on the bench against Morecambe? Or is that wishful thinking and his ITFC career is dead and buried?

I know there's a long way to go in the transfer window and maybe he's too far out the door for any sort of renaissance with us but would be a great scenario.

It's a shame, as on form he's probably still our best central midfielder. Again, it's my primary criticism of the new regime since Cook first came in that we look to be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

It’s really nothing to do with the new regime. If Downes wanted to commit to the team/club, he could have done so and would be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Downes wanted away a while ago now and it is irrelevant whether Cook or your favoured choice for Cook’s replacement is here. He wants out and needs to move on. It’s as simple as that.

Considering Lee Evans’ comments on the new culture meetings run by Ashton, or Ashton’s comments on the fan forum re: culture and mentality - letting a player who doesn’t want to be here and has shown no commitment to the club back into the side would be a HUGE backward step. In the interest of maintaining this ‘run towards adversity’ mantra, he can’t be allowed back into the first team picture.

Unfortunately by the looks of it (as much as I would love a player of Downes’ ability in the side) he is exactly the sort of player the demolition man wanted rid of. We can have the best team in the league but if they don’t operate as a unit playing for the shirt you can kiss promotion bye-bye.

Would be nice but think all central midfielders would have to be suddenly wiped out by food poisoning or something to see Downes back in there

I'm not sure if this is a serious comment but for the sake of the club (if we sell or he needs to play for whatever reason) and the player, you need to keep him in some decent sort of match fitness surely?

I don't think he's been banished Winston Boegarde style (yet!)

Aiye, Clubs have a responsibility to the players for helping them maintain fitness, regardless of if they want to stay or go. It would be awesome to see Downes back in the team, but the decision seems to mostly be his.

He needs a new agent, surely. Should have moved on by now

His agent is that guy who was on apprentice isn't it? lol

I don’t understand what the point is in playing him in the U23s. If he’s not going to play for us again and he doesn’t want to be here, why not leave him out completely?

I know it is a standard clause in American sports contracts, but from my knowledge (sports law class in law school), a club owes a duty to a contracted player to make training facilities available to them and assist in training them. It's part of the bargain a club and player make. Under those terms, a club cannot simply command a player to not show up - they have contractual duties to the player that the player may or may not exercise with regards to training and access to facilities.

It’s a restraint of trade to make them train on their own and has been tested in courts

Downes is finished with Town and even though the door was left open for him to “ reintegrate” he appears to have slammed it shut in Cooks face . Fine , cheerio 👋

I honestly believe that Downes thinks he’s a better player than he really is.
Had he gone to Palace, I couldn’t see him getting any game time, except maybe an unimportant cup game here and there.

Is this the same Downes that would not travel on the coach with the other players to the Needham Market match and went drove himself?

He can do one as far as I am concerned.

No, because Ben Morris drove him there, and a few other senior ones drove too

For what its worth I think Downes is cutting off his nose to spite his face a little. He maybe should have buckled down in pre-season and made it clear he wanted to be a part of things, if an offer from a higher level then came in then so be it, i'm sure he would have been granted his move.

As it stands I will actually be surprised if he gets a move to a Bournemouth or club at that sort of level and if he goes to a Hull or a Blackpool is he really going to be better off? We could be passing him on our way up in a few months time.

Having said all of that, we don't really know the full story so it is hard to make a definitive judgement, it just seems to me that he has probably dug his heals in, whereas Dobra for example clearly indicated early on in pre-season that he wanted to be here and is now very much part of the plans.

Downes has made it clear that he wants to leave. He can go with our best wishes.

I think this is one of those cases where agent talk has clouded a players judgement. Flynn is a nice lad and gives 100% on the pitch, but to remove himself from selection last season and signal his intent to leave early doors this season is poor form.

Unless a club like Bournemouth, Cardiff, Middlesbrough or a genuine promotion candidate from the Championship comes in for Flynn, he would be better off staying here.

'If' is able to play his best football and contribute to Paul Cook's side, there is a good chance he could be playing at a big, big club in the Championship, bringing in crowds of 25k plus most weeks, off the back of a promotion and successful re-engagement with a disenfranchised set of supporters. That big club is Ipswich.

Downes and Dozzell had their chance to shine over the last year or two, and both flattered to deceive.

No. He got a lift.

However. He is the same Downes who not once apparently has spoke to PC about getting back Into first team unlike Jackson who hasnt stopped on at him.
