Brexit just keeps on giving.... on 19:15 - Aug 25 by Darth_Koont | Harry’s right here. “No deal” was the equivalent of us saying we’d hold our breath until they gave in. A soon-to-be competitor screwing themselves over? Western Europe would just laugh and take our businesses. |
But you are ignoring what I am saying. I didn't say we should or would have come out with no deal (although no one knows) What I am saying is that it had to be on the negotiating table

No, I think you’re fatally wrong. This wasn’t poker. Everyone had all the information. “No Deal” was aimed purely at the British public and that hamstrung our negotiation. In fact it pushed the UK into a hurried acceptance of all terms just to meet the deadline. Again for the silly posturing of “Getting Brexit Done”. We were done up like one of Boris’s kippers. But of course, that still gave power to Boris et al so a trade-off they were willing to make. We negotiated away our trading position and probably even broke up the Union for the ambitions of a couple of hundred people.

Yes there is, we’d already established that in the thread. Brexit, and especially how it’s been implemented by this government, has made things worse for us.

Brexit just keeps on giving.... on 13:29 - Aug 25 by Lord_Lucan | I largely agree, but the idea of taking no deal off the table is arguably the most idiotic idea I have ever heard in my sad sorry life. I mean, it's almost as stupid as evacuating the army from the country you are occupying before evacuating the civilians. [Post edited 25 Aug 2021 13:33]

In hindsight Labour should have backed May's agreement but your no-deal assessment is wide of the mark as the analogy doesn't work. In a normal business deal (for example buying a car) you would be right, you wouldn't tell the salesman you're not leaving without a new car because he'd screw you over with the price. But in that scenario you can leave the dealership without a car, continue with the status quo, and continue with your old car. Had we returned to the status quo (EU membership) after the referendum there would have been up roar. Plus no deal wasn't an endgame, it would have weakened our hand with other markets (US, Australia etc) who could have demanded even more knowing we would have been desperate without the EU. And then what would have happened if we'd said no deal to them too? Would've been even more chaos.
