We seem so tactically naive at times 17:02 - Aug 28 with 3003 viewsclive_baker

How has a player like Carroll sat on the bench for 96 minutes when we were increasingly failing to take control of the game in the middle? Just seemed such an obvious change with 20 minutes to go.

Can’t get my head around it really.

He has no input from his coaching team, I don’t know how it worked before with Richardson but they don’t offer him anything in game.

Saw some tweets from a fan at Burton saying that Jon Ashton was doing the setup with the defenders pre game whilst the other coaches were just knocking a ball about between them.

He needs some help, or he’s going to fail - I know McGreal doesn’t want to be an assistant but we should be moving heaven and earth to try and get him in for the short term at least

That’s fiction I’m afraid. I’ve seen Jeffers and Roberts both on the touch line talking to players and pulling them over to share ideas. Let’s not start making stuff up to fit a narrative.

The idea of McGreal being a saviour or tactically astute is also a lazy connection in my view. He was not held in high regard at Colchester and nor did he do very well considering the expectation.

I’m disappointed with our defending and Cook is responsible, end of but let’s not start this grapevine stuff.

As I said a week or so back, the longer this appalling run of his goes on, the more it looks like it wasn't the players who were the problem at the back end of last season.

…although it was that squad who were responsible for our two worst finishes in 50+ years. I get that we’re all desperate for a win but all this second guessing and finger pointing is pretty poor.

Watch him on the touch line, and look how much he speaks to them - it’s not a lot at all. I don’t know how he worked with Richardson in that regard so will be interesting to see how this is different in game.

Colchester were good defensively under McGreal, and they got to the play offs in final season and had very good cup runs. And he left and they nearly got relegated - be careful what you wish for

He scraped into the play-offs in one season out of his four after being involved with the club for many, many years. He was employed to get them promoted and he barely came close - let’s not dress up his tenure as anything but that.

I agree we may need someone to sort this defence out - I don’t think McGreal is the answer though.

From what I’ve heard, Craney and Jeffers are really good coaches. Put some great sessions on and the players love it. Roberts seems the one who’s caught in the headlights with it all.

Yet from what we've seen they clearly aren't

Jeffery mainly works with the attackers

Tbf. We've scored as many as current table toppers Sunderland.

Going forward we are unquestionably better and have scored some excellent goals already; defensively we’ve been really poor, no question on the back of Saturday.
