Last season is misleading really, our defence looked good statistically because we played 'no threat' football and everything was so safe. Its easy to keep clean sheets if you play such a rigid system and take no risks.
That isn't to say that what we're witnessing right now isn't a sh1tshow though! [Post edited 12 Sep 2021 18:35]

We were a lot tighter last season because we spent 75% of a game, at least, playing 5 yard passes in our own half.
Granted, 4 defenders and 2 defensie midfielders SHOULD be enough to keep out too many attacks.... |  |

This is true. Cook is now asking for more time for the team to gel, and clearly he should be given that time, but it was his decision to rip the team apart completely, throw the baby out with the bathwater, been slow to recruit defenders, picked attacking full-backs but failed to coach cover for them, and brought in inadequate coaching staff; on top of which he's repeatedly and completely failed to change games, when the momentum has swung against us, through half-time team talks, substitutions and tactical changes. Burgess was one of the best CBs in League 1 last season, whilst Wilson was a bit part player for us. There's nothing to suggest that Wilson is a better CB than Burgess.
Edmundson played very well on loan for Derby in the Championship last season, so well in fact that they were keen to bring him back permanently. So it's not true to say he's only done anything at League 2 level. | |

wilson's older and very injury prone, only fit for <20 games last season, not playing every game for plymouth this time around. i'd have kept him around if we didn't have a 22-man squad, he's too risky with that rule.

One look at the stats from last season will tell you that Burgess was one of the top performing centre-backs in this division. Wilson didn't even register in those stats.
Edmundson went from Oldham to Rangers, where he was highly-regarded. He only fell out of favour due to covid breaches - not for footballing reasons. He was sought after by several Championship clubs, including Derby where he was on loan last season.

Were they really? Chambo was a leader for us, but his time was well and truly up. He seems to be only getting worse at Colchester as nobody can keep time at bay. Woolf's still here and been a part of our bad finish (on top of our bad 4/5th season last year). KVY is still here and had a absolute shocker yesterday as well as being part of our bad end to the season (albeit coming back from a long layoff).
There are still familiar faces at the back and they don't seem any better this year than they did last.
