Owen Patterson suspended from Commons for 30 Day 10:12 - Oct 26 with 1196 views | Steve_M | Back in the 90s this was called Cash for Questions as Neil Hamilton would tell you if he had a shred of honesty. As with Claudia Webbe, hard to see any reason why he should be allowed to stay as an MP.

Yep. Exactly my thoughts. For me, this is an offence that requires a short custodial and a large fine. Say all wages and expenses earned paid back at a rate of x1.5.

Owen Patterson suspended from Commons for 30 Day on 10:52 - Oct 26 with 1049 views | Illinoisblue | Genuine question, when was the last time an MP or Minister actually apologised for their wrongdoing ? I think that used to happen, can vaguely remember it. David Mellor resigning in the early 90s. There must be others.

And how is it ok, that an MP can earn 3 x his/her MP salary from consultancy/lobbying and not think this might be an issue?
Owen Patterson suspended from Commons for 30 Day on 11:58 - Oct 26 with 903 views | Swansea_Blue | Ah, the difference with Paterson over Webb is that this is a gentlemanly, wink wink, nudge nudge, grease my palm, misdemeanor where the only thing he's done wrong is get caught. Webb's breach was so crass and common, which is not seemly behaviour for the House! *sarcasm off* It's a shame serious breaches of ministerial code can't result in automatic triggering of a by-election. Although there'd be lots of by-elections with this lot!

There wouldn't really because most of the open corruption that is in the public realm does not break the ministerial code. This is the first case that has done so for a long time. It is such a shame that the electorate generally does not care about corruption in politics.

Didn't John Major do so? Although that was obviously a different type of offence and in clearly different times. I think it is symptomatic of MPs knowing the electorate do not hold them to account and therefore do not care.

Isn't lying at the dispatch box and misleading the house a breach of the code? That happens pretty much weekly these days.

Apparently not. No one gets pulled up for it. Indeed, isn't there protection against lying to the house? You can't be prosecuted for saying something clearly untrue within the chamber can you?

Indeed. His only issue with it is that he got caught. Although what does being caught even mean anymore? The era of no consequences, no shame. Snouts in the trough and don’t you dare question me about it. “We’re elected officials, we’ll do what we want”

Surely the blame is not with the parliamentary investigation doing its job, though (unless it did it in an unnecessarily uncaring and vindictive way (which I think was his claim). Terribly sad that his wife died and that the investigation may have contributed to it, however, perhaps he also should look at his own culpability.

Robin Cook resigned over going into Iraq, I recall, presumably in 2003.

Now the response is "shut up pleb, the public doesn't care about us being corrupt, move on"
