Omicron numbers - I don't get it 19:12 - Dec 20 with 7489 views | Wicksy | Case numbers are supposedly doubling ever 2 to 3 days. I'm pretty certain the case numbers were c 50k a day well over a week ago but are still 'only' c 90k when they should be c 300k- 400k What am I missing?

Omicron numbers - I don't get it on 09:45 - Dec 28 by Trequartista | I would suggest someone going into hospital with a broken arm who tests positive in hospital with asymptomatic covid is something very different to someone who is admitted with covid and is in icu having developed pneumonia. The former would be in hospital anyway, for a starter. I am not one-sided with the truth though so i will also point out i have since discovered the former would still have to go to a covid ward, so this still puts pressure on covid bed numbers, but not overall bed numbers. |
It's important to appreciate though that nosocomial COVID is an enormous problem for cancer wards, outpatient treatments, and is a big part of the challenge the NHS is facing. If (for example) closing pubs for two weeks meant that cancer care wasn't disrupted around the country it would easily be a price worth paying from my perspective, appreciate that different people have different objectives though.

Omicron numbers - I don't get it on 19:17 - Dec 22 by jeera | Not for me. I do not like cats. Dub has a cat and so does Factors. If this happens again in 20 years time you speak to them and leave me well out of it. |
I’ve got two four month old kittens. They’re innocent!!!

It has been known for sometime that 1 in 3 positive tests are people not showing any symptoms so not a surprise that people being admitted to hospital for non-Covid reasons are testing positive. Think it was Stokie who mentioned the Zoe estimates, they are currently suggesting over 180,000 new cases a day. This suggests that the number of people unknowingly carrying the virus is higher than 1 in 3. Reporting hospitalised cases is at least 5 days behind the reporting for new cases. Not sure if it is realistic to improve reporting from Hospitals, nor to record as a separate figure the number of cases in hospital which are not showing symptoms.

I just chose asymptomatic to illustrate the point, I could alternatively have chosen mildly symptomatic, the point was that they weren't in hospital because of covid. I think the separate figure showing hospitalisations because of covid rather than with covid is already being recorded, as the ft correspondent (Burn-Murdoch) has been plotting graphs with the adjusted figures.

Almost like you are comparing countries in different hemispheres with different restrictions in place.

Ignore SA for one minute and click on the deaths button. UK and Eire against EU and USA do a complete flip. Has to be down to testing accuracy or volume surely?

Even that is not entirely straightforward, though. "Deaths are somewhat more reliable, but remain problematic because countries have different rules for what deaths to include in their official numbers. The most notable difference between countries’ Covid mortality figures is whether or not they include deaths outside hospitals, particularly in care homes. Some countries like France and the UK have even changed which deaths they include during the course of the epidemic." from the FT article.

They are simply a few weeks ahead. Omicron peaks and drops quicker and steeper than previous variants.

The rate at which it infects means it gets through the population quicker! Edit..the fact that only 48.3 % of the South African population are fully vaccinated and hospitals have coped should give us all cause for optimism! ( Sorry for this outlandish suggestion in advance btw) [Post edited 28 Dec 2021 18:28]
