McKenna's first match (assuming we play on Wednesday) 17:21 - Dec 26 with 4449 viewsNthsuffolkblue

We are 11th but 4 points behind 10th and 7 points off 9th (who have a game in hand on us). A full 10 points off the play-offs with 4 of those teams between us and 6th all having a game in hand on us.

Burton are only a point behind us with a game in hand. Bolton 3 points with 1 in hand and Wimbledon are 4 points behind with 3 games in hand on us.

Even if McKenna gets us winning very soon, it is going to be some time before we move up the league table and there is every chance we will be firmly mid-table even if we can get good form.

We cannot judge McKenna on league position for some considerable time. He has taken us over completely cut adrift. This doesn't mean that results do not matter. We need to judge him on performances, results and ppg but not on league position.

The degree to which we have failed over the past 2.5 seasons is quite staggering and Cook did worse on the pitch than Lambert - a man a year ago you could easily have made a case for being our worst manager of all time all things considered.

I always wondered what has made us so fundamentally bad. Ok signing division 4 players to play in division 2 doesn't help. But non league sides have come past us.

We have replaced mot of those players with players who have decent experience and yet gone backwards.

The common factor is that we have looked uncoached and with poor tactics. That has been under 3 different managers for 3 seasons now.

Think your second paragraph is the nail on the head. Poorly coached and poorly organised. Cook clearly did not have the right blend of staff, I think any successful manager has the right team around him. When you look where Richardson is now and where Anthony Barry is - you can see how/why they'd have been missed from his time at Wigan.

It's pleasing that whilst McKenna is clearly inexperienced, he's got another trusted lieutenant and proven, quality coach with him and at least one more on the way.

We have no idea whether it will work out for McKenna but it certainly looks more likely than the previous 3 based on what we can see of the way things are being organised.

just consider too, when we sat top of the championship, we had a 10 point lead on norwich sat in 7th.....

we then managed to bottle/throw that away, and sstumble into 6th place, whilst norwich finished 3rd, and went on to beat us in the PO

so a ten point gap isnt impossible to close.

Assuming you are right on the facts (and I can’t be bothered to check), you’ve shown that Norwich managed to overtake one team that was ten points above them. You’ve also shown that they /didn’t/ manage to achieve a league position that was as good as a team ten points above them. We were first- they fell two spots short of that. So your hand picked example does not show any likelihood of us ending up in the spot that a team 10 points above us currently occupies.

We may well overtake one team who are now 10 points above us, but to replace them in that position we also have to overtake teams in between, or some teams above them. In our current position that is not at all likely.

Theoretically possible, yes, but so are most things in football.

It’s not just about coaching. It’s also about attitude, character and whether the players out there respect and work for each other. If they don’t have the right attitude, no coach in the world will change them. We’ve not seen a proper team here since McCarthy’s time.

If the mix of players is wrong or one or two think they’re better than the rest (Man Utd style tonight) then that needs to be sorted out. Stay and commit or move on. I don’t care who they are.

One of Cooks many mistakes was putting himself in a position where players were slung at the team. A patchwork team of strangers rarely works, especially when some of are quite frankly not very good and others are picking up a good living shining their rear ends for one reason or another.

Throwing away a 10 point at the top of league is far easier than making up a 10 point gap from 11th.

Hmm...Cook replaced virtually the entire squad, presumably because either he thought they weren't good enough or had a poor attitude. He's bought in 19 players at huge cost & are they all useless as well? we'll never build a decent team by constantly changing the manager, all the coaches and the squad.

The best thing Cook did was kicking out almost entire squad after last season. That shower wouldn't deliver for the three managers so that shows where the main fault was and that was the players not the managers.

This season though no excuses for Cook.

I would just like us to put on some kind of actual run of good form. Not just a good game or two and then returning to be utter poo. If we can get some consistency in this division then we ought to get to the play-offs from here as the one thing that this division (bar Rotherham) does is inconsistency.

Regardless, I don't think KM can be judged on league position this season, so much damage has already been done.
