Christmas Miracles and Mckenna.. 10:23 - Dec 27 with 3024 views | OriginalMarkyP | Some people seem to think we are still going to make the playoffs. It's possible. But let's be honest, it's unlikely. Its asking a LOT of the new coaching team to bed in their ideas so quickly. In the short term, they are going to have to keep it very simple. My directive would be 'Win your battles. Then play football'. That's why I'd always start with a two of Norwood and Bonne up top and Chaplin in Midfield. I'd ask them to give me 60 mins of maximum effort of working over the defense physically and then look to change it once theyve done maximum damage. Not rocket science. More Slapshot tactics. But maybe rocket science can wait.

Christmas Miracles and Mckenna.. on 09:11 - Dec 29 by Sharkey | The difference is that there are plenty of other clubs in a better position to catch up the top 6. In your terms, Colchester are in a better position than Town when it comes to getting promoted, being only 11 points off the play-offs with a game or two in hand. But they’re also 20th in the table. |
As a reminder, anything is possible. Palace were 20th in the Championship after 23 games in 2003, 20 points off top and 12 points off the play offs. They finished 6th, and won the play offs that year, having beaten West Ham in the final, who beat us in the Semi Finals. Whilst it's possible, it's not impossible. I hope the players don't have the same defeatist attitude of many of our supporters.

I don’t think it’s being defeatist particularly. It’s being realistic. The last two months has shown we are well short of the top teams. The gap is huge and there’s a lot to sort out. I’m hoping we go on a run but realistically I think I’d just settle for improvement and hope that we have the basics for a properly competitive team next year. McK has said the right things regarding the season not being dead. Rightly so. He needs to build a team, not watch his players eyeing up the Aya Napa sun loungers.

I don't get the impression that people have specific expectations about where we'll finish this season. There's an understanding that making the play-offs would take an exceptional run and that we haven't looked capable of that all season. That said you can overstate the impossibility of the task. It would only take one big winning run of 5 games or so and that gap to 6th is suddenly down to 3 points and we blaze past most of the traffic to the play-offs. Not something we've looked like doing, but also not out of the ordinary.

when i look at our game up until sheff weds away i see absolutely nothing to fear, we could even see this new manager bounce that others speak of! my vision is 6 wins from next 7...... of course i wont blame anyone if it doesnt happen, but why go into another new era being down on the last

It's the sort of division where you can win 4-5 games on the bounce. Not saying we will, but we could. For me in the short term I want to see a team better coached and with better tactical awareness better decision making by the players etc. For all MM faults he was very good at sussing out the opposition mid game (sadly often to negate the other team) but since then we've looked such a poorly setup team. Longer term I want to see players improve. I'm fine with buying the likes of Nsiala and improving them, less so buying the likes of Nsiala and seeing no improvement after 3 years. If we can't improve them, go shopping elsewhere. I don't go with the KM has a free-hit argument. He has 2 transfer windows before next season starts to make sure we don't waste another 12 months in this division. Anything above that is a bonus.

To counter that, up until Dowie. Palace had shown they were nowhere near competing with the top six. The second half of the season said otherwise. There’s a lot to be said for positivity, on the pitch AND in the stands.
