...the battery drains overnight without use.
Switched mobile roaming off in case it is searching for our non existent signal and it still drains.
In aeroplane mode it does not drain.
Does this mean it is just a duff battery? [Post edited 28 Jan 2022 9:09]

Best thing to do is backup your data and do a factory reset.
Only put on apps that you really need. If you have a plethora of messaging apps, each one of those is constantly polling to see if you have new messages. There will also be apps out there that can give an assessment of your battery life; but if it doesn't drain in airplane mode, it means apps are sucking the life out of your phone. You should be able to see in Settings > Battery which those apps are. |  | | |

If it's a Samsung, it's going to come with quite a few apps installed that you may not need. FB (as an app) is a known power hog, for example.
If the battery was shagged, it won't hold a charge and will drain even if the phone is switched off. If the phone is in "flight mode" that's basically restricting it from doing much, so if it's not draining in that mode, it's not the battery, it's what is happening on the phone to drain the battery, if that makes sense.
It's probably also running an old version of Android. You can get newer versions of Android that aren't "stock" (i.e. don't come from Samsung) and probably worth Googling "Android 12" + model of phone to see how you can do that. "Flashing" it (getting rid of Samsung bloatware / getting the latest version of Android) probably the best solution IMHO.
Also try not to charge it beyond 80% unless you have to / leave it plugged in charging all day, that will kill the battery.

Upday is the Samsung news app when you scroll left off the home screen iirc. Disable it and clear the cache and data and see if that helps. |  | | |

Does it give you the option to "Force Close" upday? An app I've also seen, but doesn't appear to be active. I also have an S7, but tend to charge it overnight.
The fact it doesn't drain in airplane mode suggests it's something communicating with the outside world while you're asleep and, if your reception is poor, that would certainly be an issue.
Location can be turned off in Settings, under Connections. Or it can be switched from high to low accuracy. | |
