Planning Permission Submitted For Big Screen At Portman Road 13:40 - Mar 9 with 5102 viewsSheffordBlue

Looks like the club have submitted the planning permission that Mark Ashton talked about in the last fan forum. The documents aren't available online yet but probably will be in the next few days to see what the plans are but the details shown on the online platform are:

1. Partial demolition and alteration to South East corner
2. Alteration to Home & Away Dugouts
3. New 'Big Screen' over South East corner

The planning ref is 22/00206/FUL and you should be able to view and comment on the application at https://ppc.ipswich.gov.uk/searchselect.asp once the documents are live.

Eight weeks from now takes us to early/mid-May, then the demolition work has to be done and presumably some building work so everything is safe and hunky dory, then another eight weeks of pitch work, which may be an underestimate as what they want to do is fairly extensive at a foundation level, undersoil heating etc, then we're getting awfully close to the start of the season, which is July 30th this year due to the World Cup.

Could request the first couple of home games to be switched to the respective away tie.

I think another issue could be availability of pitch specialists. The work will need a specialist contractor and there aren't that many who could do it. Some of those contractors will be out in Qatar on big money contracts getting stadium and practice pitches installed.

As with many sectors supply chains will have been disrupted due to COVID.

It's quite feasible that the club looked to sequence it together and there's a waiting list of 12-18 months to get the work done.

Wait what's wrong with the scoreboards at Portman Road as they are? Would be a shame to see the old terrace steps in the corner go for the sake of creating some more digital advert space.

I would tend to agree. It's great that new owners are investing in the ground and the infrastructure, but the purist in me hates the idea of a giant screen. It's such a lovely old fashioned ground. Why do we need a huge screen? To me, it belongs in American sports and not in football, like goal music, countdowns etc.

League games aren't ties, but yes that could add some time.

I suppose the same experts are required at the same time of the year by plenty of clubs across Europe as well. I had heard a whisper that it might not happen until next summer and the timing of the application and the lag does tend to suggest that that will be the case.

Having been to the MK Dons game and being fed distracting ads throughout the game on 4 big screens I’m not really a fan of the idea of having one. What is the point exactly?

This gives the overiew of the plans. These steps are a precursor to redoing the pitch at the end of next season. Dugouts to be to Premier League standard. Some nice detail on the artists illustration of the big screen.

So you don't ever want the club to be in the top division of English football?

That is the club's ambition and rightly so, having a large screen and better dugouts is a condition required for top level clubs. You can hate it all you like, but with the introduction of VAR etc (which i hate) a large screen is compulsory, not optional.

Blame the FA and Premier league, not the owners. The owners should be admired for having ambition of wanting to make the club top flight ready.

There are some financial realities as well. If we don't maximise the advertising revenue available to us then we won't be competitive - we can't expect the US Pension Fund to just give us cash if we won't generate it ourselves. The big screen/digital hoardings allows for much more flexibility for adverstisers e.g. changing who is advertising on it when we appear on TV

Big screen isn’t that bad but I’m not a fan of electronic advertising boarding’s.

MK Dons is terrible though, as there’s four you really notice when an advert changes etc with the light. Ours won’t be like that as PR is lit a lot better.

The digital hoardings do allow for increased revenue though as you can sell the same space multiple times. If we want to compete at the top end then we need to maximise the revenue coming into the club

There was talk on here the other week about A new sponsor for next season. Am I reading too much into the fact that the artists impressions have Magnus Group plastered all over them?

I thought the talk was about who might replace Ed as shirt sponsor rather than a change of sponsor for the stand. Maybe they are in the frame for sponsoring more than the stand

Essex Cricket replaced their main scoreboard with a very large digital screen a few years ago. Now they've got an advertising screen which occasionally shows the score.

I'm guessing they're not big enough to be a shirt sponsor.

Hoopers, who did the design, wouldn't have any inside info anyway.
