Germany does pay more but the German model encourages private health care which can replace or top up state cover. The Germans work on the basis if you can afford private health it should be encouraged as it reduces the strain on the state health.
In this country in previous General Elections parties have talked about increasing the tax on private health insurance including those who receive private health as a benefit from their company, in Germany they encourage companies to offer private health to their staff. Also note those same individuals with private health care don't receive any reduction in their taxes so the same amount is still used towards the state health care

We will never have a grown-up conversation in this country about health

I'm trying to have a grown up conversation right now about it, and so far nobody has been able to explain why changing the method of funding without increasing the amount of it will actually do anything.

The most you've put there is that having private health care reduces the strain on the health system, but we can already do that. Whilst you can't replace it, you can top up your own and it is offered by quite a few companies. So, again, I don't see how the funding model in this circumstance makes a difference when compared to our own.

Because we seem wedded to the idea that it’s the NHS or the USA. There is never a grown up conversation where alternatives are discussed.

There isn’t a single country that models it’s health care system on the NHS. But we treat it as a national religion.

We need a complete re think about how we find our health care and how the people working in it can be better paid and the system by petter funded. That may mean continuing in with the same NHS system with massive tax increases, but no one will have the conversations on a national level.

Utter nonsense.

Rightie speak for an insurance based system, where money is spent on administration rather tham medical workers. Whilst Germany foes not have the 3rd world problems of the US there is still an awful lit of money leeched out through insurers disputing what they will pay.

A grown up discussion might start with the truth being shown - not rightie guff. Lets look at how far up the performance table th UK is. But more importantly something that is hard to quantify the reassurance that you will not have to pay. That you will not become embroiled in some long battle with an insurance company.

Bu as ever, the rightie can only see the price of everything, rather than value of something. So we get these absurd whines that we should have a 'conversation' - which never involve medical experts, but shyster politicians on the make.

Righties have fcked up the utilities and trains, all owned by naughty foreigners (mostly state), s fon't let them near out health service, whatever lies they try to peddle.

A grown up discussion would include a more nuanced evaluation.

Access to primary healthcare here is outstanding, and we are a leader in Europe on the proportion of drugs that are prescribed in their (cheaper) generic form instead of the branded version.
Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands have a shorter average length of stay in hospital, which some see as a key indicator of efficiency throughout the health system.
The UK has one of the lowest numbers of practising doctors per population (including GPs and hospital doctors) in the EU.
The UK also has far fewer CT scanners and MRI scanners per head of population than most other European countries.
UK breast and cervical cancer, survival rates are below the EU average, but we are a world leader in in dealing with and preventing congestive heart problems.

There are things at which the NHS is top-class, and things at which it is not that good. Until people are allowed to discuss these issues without being slagged off or being accused of being 'righties' there will never be a grown up discussion, or much scope for improving those areas which badly need improving.

My Granddaughter manager to get a place at Uni. Only 100 were selected out of over 1000. When my Dad was alive he went into hospital after a heart attack. All one of the nurses was interested in was getting him shifted out of his bed a.s.a.p. we resisted as I said he wasn't leaving the hospital until an alarm system was installed in case he had a relapse. We had already sorted one out and were waiting for it to be fitted. Further to this, when my dear old mum was alive (She died aged 50) there were convalescent homes, usually at the seaside, Felixstowe had one, where people who were recovering could go. Guess what ? They were all done away with. Now they blame the elderly for bed blocking.

I don’t think anyone blames the elderly for bed blocking, mostly it’s successive governments that have failed to sort social care, and the governments since 2010 for underfunding the nhs in real terms.

Don’t think a return to convalescent homes are the answer, just funding for packages of care, residential home and nursing home beds.

The only Muff in Town.
