Flynn Downes.... on 09:45 - Mar 23 by BlueBadger | He's not even the worst Paul we ever had in charge. He at least didn't rip up a competent-for-the-division side(actually he did, but he didn't replace them with players who were competent players for the division below) or get us relegated. Merely marooning us in League One makes him only third worst. Our worst ever manager's title is a joint holding between Keane and Hurst. [Post edited 23 Mar 2022 13:25]

Flynn Downes.... on 09:57 - Mar 23 by The_Flashing_Smile | If you have to work that hard at persuading someone to stay, do you really want them anyway? If their heart's not really in it then somewhere down the line those pigeons will come home to roost. |
At the time I thought if he wants to go then let him but it’s all relative and not really as simple as that. We would have had to sell the vision to all of the players we signed, especially those we persuaded to drop down. As I said before, Morsy didn’t sound like he particularly wanted to come (but probably didn’t feel he had much choice as Middlesbrough wanted him to go and the deal was agreed) and he still performed. Could have persuaded Downes that things had changed and our ambitions matched his. Treat him like a potential new signing and one you really want to keep. Anyway, we move on…

And makes me wish Hurst had been called Paul Hunt.

It's been a shower really, for so, so long. The last manager I felt genuinely enthused about was probably Royle. He just gave the place a bit of life and you knew you'd be entertained. Now with McK, we know we're going to see football played properly. We still need more steel and creativity in the middle, and I don't see Celina being the answer to that due to his inconsistency. That said, it's nice to have a reliably solid defensive unit without ever appearing to be a defensive side.

Had he stayed another season, he would have probably had a good go at relegating us again and thus, earned the title.

Squad full of League Two rookies (who've since proven to be barely good enough for League One) signed by an idiot and late-career veterans subsequently managed by an incompetent in "not being able to put up convincing fight in the Championship" shocker. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yeah Hurst's recruitment was a main reason but the number of players didn't deliver for the three managers and that is quite telling.

Which players in particular, and which three managers?

Hurst, Lambert and Cook. The latter got rid of them last May and that was the best thing he did for the club.

Is this the thing again where we hold Chambers, Skuse and Sears solely responsible for their complete failures in pioneering research to prevent the ageing process?

Tough one though. Some of them did deliver for a different manager before the 3 Pauls turned up. And our current players also didn't really deliver for our last manager but seem able to do better for our current one. Obviously there's a limit and some players are simply not up to it, or get too old, but I'm pretty convinced that it's the manager/coaching staff that has the biggest impact on whether the team delivers or not.
