That we ended up finishing below Portsmouth and Bolton tbh. How did that happen?!

I don’t think they’re first team.

Ndaba won’t be coming back to play in our under 23s that’s for sure.

Cook happened

I understand the sentiment, but I think were above them when he was sacked (I stand to be corrected). It feels a little too easy to simply say 'Cook happened when for much of the time since January we were above them. Truth is that our form has tailed off - and that can;t really be blamed on Cook!

I think the simple answer is that we’re not a good team yet.

This season, we’ve developed a stable, defensive foundation that is very much the start of that but little cohesion and pattern ahead of that (beyond Donacien and Burns on the right who are ostensibly defenders).

I think there was a bit too much hubris at the start of the season that an almost entirely new squad of admittedly talented players would automatically become a promotion team. As much as anything that’s a misreading of the league and the 7 teams that will finish comfortably ahead of us.
And even teams like Bolton and Portsmouth have been more effective at times.

But for me this is a sobering experience we need. Promotion won’t be achieved by buying the best players per se, it’ll be by building, sustaining and developing the best team. And I have confidence in McKenna and the individual ability in the squad (with a few key additions to shape our attacking play).

We can be optimistic given we’ve come a long way this season (the defensive unit and Walton really are very, very good) and we’re a lot closer to a genuine promotion team than we were back in August.

noun
excessive pride or self-confidence.
"the self-assured hubris among economists was shaken in the late 1980s"

Perhaps this poor form will mean we are a little humble going into next term. We'll need some luck, avoid some injuries, great backing by the fans, and some great purchases.

The Wigan second half was essential for me, as it showed that McKenna ball can include threat once combined with urgency.

But hey it ain't going to be easy guys... and if we lose a number of early games it could get concerning.

A nice win against Charlton would help the cause.

Cook happened

The players have to take some responsibility for the finish.

Cook wasn't the one switching off at the back, or near the end of games and allowing the opposition to nab points off us, these guys failed to show up at Cheltenham, Burton, watched us get spanked by recently 4th division Bolton at home, losing to West Ham's and Arsenal's reserves, losing to 4th division Newport, losing to 4th division Barrow, failing to beat 4th division Oldham at home (who have since dropped out of the EFL) and it's a trend of not turning up when it mattered all season, whenever we got a sniff of Playoffs we collapsed, failed and trotted out the same old PR.

If next season is going to actually be #OURTIME, the players need to be winners and not passengers picking up a wage here.

I am also n agreement that the pressure is on Ashton to fix this, and on Gamechanger to improve the results on the pitch first and foremost. If they fail to do so, we need to start making a lot of noise or we'll be faced with another Evans situation. We are loyal to Ipswich, not to owners, CEO's or managers. We want to win games of football and trophies, and actually, earn respect as a club again by being a competitive club again and not a walkover for failing players, managers, CEOs, and whatnot to come here and con a living.

This is exactly my view.

We have come a long way this season in the way you describe and the starting point of decay and shambles reflects the state of the club when GC bought it.

We have some good players here; bits of a really good team, hence the runaround given to one or two of the better teams this season; something that never happened in the previous two. I do not subscribe to the view that the players are here just picking up a wage/not trying either. They’ve given their best in my view and have been a lot fitter than previous seasons too. No iron lung required at half time, unlike the previous seasons. Naïve, mugged at times, loss of control, errors yes. No 3-0 give ups like Northampton this season though.

They’re just not a complete team yet. GC and McKenna can’t score goals for them or put in what certain of our players lack. Ability. That’s for KM and MA to sort in the summer. Build on the good things we have and do, a good pre season, better dead ball delivery and finishing and I believe we will be top two. It’s not that big a leap for this team.

We are miles further forward than last year. If McKenna was a promising manager a month ago, he still is now.

The problem is we were sold a promising young manager, but someone who would take us up, or be in the play offs.

Two of his signings, Thompson and Bakinson, have not been any great addition.

Wigan finished one place above the relegation places last season. Did they spend more than us ? I'm certain they did not have a better squad.

This is not about us being in a better position to give it a go, but about getting promoted, something we fell short of even though McK has had half a season to sort out things ie deadball play.

I also stand to be corrected but I'm pretty sure they both had a few games in hand over us for a while!
