My summer holiday plans red flagged 07:05 - May 16 with 2023 viewsPendejo

Part of my morning routine is to clear down social media notifications, in my case that's WhatsApp and LinkedIn.

LinkedIn kindly tells you when your profile has been viewed, this morning I have found that "Employer at Bank of Venezuela" has viewed my profile.

In a few weeks we are off to Colombia to visit the in-laws and for the first time I have made advanced plans / bookings for a visit to Santa Marta, which is a Caribbean resort, relatively close to the Venezuelan border.

Kidnapping is big business in Colombia, but it used to take them 3 months to research targets. In the digital age I guess it's quicker and easier.

Will now take steps to re-arrange things.

I'm not worth kidnapping, but at the moment I have a sum of money transiting from savings to credit card in my current account that may make it look like I am.

Surely a bit stoopid to mention Venezuela in their profile though if it is what you suspect.

Or it's a warning...

Don't know but as I have not made plans to visit Venezuela, and not knowingly transacted anything via Bank of Venezuela.

I will change plans as a precaution, better safe than sorry.

Depending on who you work for it might be worth raising it to your security department they may be able to give some advice.

So do you bank with the Bank Of Venezuela? If not, how would they be aware of you and how much money you have?

If you do bank with them, then you should raise it with them as obviously they have some dodgy employees!

Surely that couldn’t happen - I thought Venezuela was a safe socialist utopia, and “a model for parties of the left in the west.”

No don't bank with them...

However I do know the OCGs down that way do have banking systems compromised, in this case I think the problem is either within the hotel or the website thru which booking was made.

You don't think you might be overreacting? I mean a visit to your Linkedin profile could be for any number of reasons more likely than scoping a kidnap.

Wow, that's scary stuff. I see Foreign Office guidance recommends staying away from many parts of these countries. Especially border areas where drug traffickers operate. Last thing you want is a run-in with Pablo's pals.

"Ten cuidado" as they say!

At be and maybe not.

I lived in Colombia for 2 years, hence Pendejo user name and having Colombian in-laws. The ex-pat community was a good source of Intel and advice for avoiding problems. That was 20 years ago.
Kidnaps didn't usually just happen, research is usually undertaken to make sure it's worth their while.

However, 're possible over reaction... Here's the factors that inform my opinion here and now
* My job is UK based (niche market) with no overseas interest whatsover.
* I have no plans to visit Venezuela
* I have no (known) financial transactions pending that involves Venezeula
* Cross border crime is rife with Venezeula
* Santa Marta not far from a previously active guerrilla zone.

Better safe than sorry, think I will change my plans

Isn't it more likely that there's a contact of a contact in your friends list that is looking for business contacts or a job and he fell upon you?

About my lad spent a fair bit of time up there, Branquilla for the carnival and even went up to the desert peninsula (can't recall the name) right on the Venezuelan border. He had more bother in Medellin.

Yeah, but if there was a 1% chance that you knew a trafficking and smuggling gang was scoping you out, and you had a choice, would you go anywhere near the hotel which may have tipped them off.

Pendejo may be over-reacting, but I think you always have to trust your gut on things like this, and something seems not right.

I totally understand your concerns and I am of the belief also that if you had NO knowledge of the countries/regions you'd not even give it a second thought...but you DO and once a seed is planted it can easily grow.
I would personally go with whatever changes you feel you need to do,otherwise it'll just eat away at you.

Or you could just go knowing you are more likely to be struck by lightning on a sunny day - or hit by a bus crossing the road with the dog you haven’t got.

If it makes you feel any better those swanky resorts in Colombia, just like the Uber-trendy places in Mexico are money laundering operations so nothing will happen - because if it did the chainsaws would be very busy
