Sure we can all agree with this copper on 20:00 - Jun 30 by NthQldITFC | When you're in single file and tucked in on a two lane road, some motorists think it's OK to squeeze past a vulnerable cyclist with traffic coming in the other direction. It is fkn terrifying sometimes, so I always pull out towards the middle of the lane I am in when I hear a car coming from behind. A motor vehicle driver should be able to use all of the opposite lane to get past a cyclist safely, so two cyclists abreast taking up perhaps half of a lane should not be any different for overtaking than a single cyclist, but any group will only be half as long so actually quicker to get round safely, as the rozzer says. |
Can I ask, (I could look it up but I'd rather learn from my virtual online friends), if cycles are supposed to be fitted with bells or horns or anything other than "Oi" as a warning to pedestrians? That's not to complain because I did pretty much step out in front of a cyclist this PM in the village. Was a long scattered line of them, had to be a good 15mph [downhill gradient]. It was my fault as I obviously didn't look properly but being still stuck in a time before electric cars I suppose I use my ears before my eyes sometimes. And this was between two lines of parked cars so I'd expect a little extra caution, including from motorists [!] and have often got into mild disagreements along that stretch where road users don't seem to observe the situation. I will get run over one day but the jury' s out on which mode it will be. [Post edited 30 Jun 2022 20:49]

Bells are a legal requirement. I find shouting is far more likely to help avoid a collision.

I politely stepped back and got lots of smiles and 'thank yous' as they went by. I smiled back and got the one at the back when no one was looking. Not really. Just pleasantness all round but I did think bells would be a prerequisite but there were none.

I'm not sure and I don't have one on my bike, but I think you're right, and I'm going to get one sorted directly as a result of your post. TWTD is a great force for good in the world!

I’m always highly amused on my commute when someone feels their impatience is just cause for potentially denying my wife and kids of my existence. Waiting a few seconds or even minutes is not the end of the world. I ride alone and safely but there are some d-ckhead motorists out there - as there are cyclists. The difference being, the former can kill, the latter unlikely to.

There are hills!! Definitely need to get some training in.

Amused or not, unecessarily holding people up will lead to this. It doesn't matter how unreasonable people are being after the event does it? So why provide circumstances which make it more likely? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Sure we can all agree with this copper on 17:41 - Jun 30 by ZXBlue | I follow his logic, but in many instances its nonsense. It makes it much harder to overtake because they are taking up more space. Furthermore, they do it so they can natter to each other, very often. Which is not safe at all. |
Quite right. When they are riding two abreast it becomes almost impossible to squeeze past on narrow roads.

I have some lovely cameras on my bike. I am averaging 1 close pass event, that the police take action on, per ride out at the moment. Impatience and/or annoyance isn’t a form of defence apparently.
