How good is our defensive record under KM? 12:58 - Aug 18 with 2583 viewsArnoldMoorhen

Well, at 15 Goals Against in 27 League matches, we would average 26 Goals Against over a 46 game season.

To put that into perspective, the Arsenal Invincibles team hold the English top division record for games without defeat, at 49 games. During those 49 games they conceded 35 Goals. That would average out at 33 Goals Against over a 46 game season.

We have a superior defensive record than the most coherent defensive unit seen in post-war English football, during their peak period!

Now I'm not saying that Luke Woolfenden is better than Tony Adams, but Christian Walton definitely wouldn't have fallen on his Arsenal back-pedalling for that Ronaldinho free kick.

I would take issue with the description of the Arsenal invincibles as "the most coherent defensive unit seen in post-war English football". The team I would think of would be Liverpool in 1978/79 - they conceded 16 in their 42 league games.

Beat me to it. Was looking up the stats!

I’d personally prefer Keogh’s nous than Burgess’ aerial ability because too often last year we stopped points in that period where CB had come into the team for GE

I'm not suggesting he start, and there might only be a handful of games where he were a better option than Keogh, but if we're 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go and facing an onslaught in the air from a team like Cheltenham, he might be the answer. Indeed, he was brought on in the last couple of minutes against Burton, and I think it was him who made the header for their last corner.

Not sure how making your own luck applies to the oppo missing sitters :)

Sounds like we are missing a golden opportunity. Let them have him back!

I’ve just posted this on Twitter, as spotted a bit of nonsense this week that they are shaky, or don’t play well together etc. Woolf and Fridge together is the absolute nuts.

When Luke Woolfenden and George Edmundson both start for #ITFC under McKenna

Played 18
Won 11
Drawn 5
Lost 2

Goals conceded 7

Clean sheets 12

I don’t think it’s incorrect to say either have had their moments in the last couple of games, but them as pairing, their quality can’t be denied

We’ll be good again... one day

I'm not entirely convinced that Burgess helps us defend leads very well. We have dropped points from winning positions 4 times under McKenna and we had Burgess at centre back for all 4.

Meanwhile, how's this for a stat. Our defensive record after taking the lead under McKenna with Woolfenden and Edmundson in the lineup is perfect. We've taken 11 leads, haven't conceded a single goal thereafter, not even a consolation goal.
