Supposing you came into big money and wanted to invest in an amateur side 15:57 - Aug 19 with 1387 viewsMalcolmMeatballHead

Say, Hadleigh utd, Brantham or Ipswich Wanderers for example how much do you reckon it would cost to get them into the football league?

Edit: I haven't won the lotto, I just have too much time to think about such situations

Given the Salford approach you're looking a £3-5M, then you have to suck up the losses, they are doing £91k a week.

So, if you've had a little £10 scratchard win, it might take a few more of those.

As the saying goes.
'You can make a small fortune from a football club. Just start with a large fortune.'

I would say with those clubs little chance whatever you spend. You need a club base - I watch Farsley Celtic in national league North. They're a suburb of Leeds. Spent big, got into Conference and went bust. Even now they're probably a league above where they should be. Ideally you need to be a largish town/area with an identity that will get people in. Forest Green might be an exception but they got that corner of Gloucestershire behind them.

Think what you say is right in order for it to be sustainable, rather than just bankrolled. If someone felt inclined to put £50m into Hadleigh or Sudbury I dare say they would have a good crack at getting to the football league but it certainly wouldn’t be an investment.

To your point I think Maidstone is a good example. Population isn’t dissimilar to Ipswich and while it’s not the nicest town, Kent is affluent. You’ve got Gillingham in L2 but it’s a tiny place and other than them there’s nobody decent until you get to south / SE London Charlton / Palace etc which is a very different patch. You would think Maidstone could be a sustainable football league club for sure. I can see the logic behind investing in a club like that. They’re a young club and slowly but surely rising through the leagues.

Locally I'd say Lowestoft would be worth a crack, they probably could sustain a fanbase up to that kind of level

Nearly all football fans in the Maidstone area support Charlton.

Histon beat Leeds relatively recently and got within spitting distance of the league which isn’t bad for a village side. On that basis you could give Leiston a try - or the housing estate formerly known as Saxmundham - they are least are small towns.
